‘The Boys‘ has consistently demonstrated throughout its final season that no character is safe, and the penultimate episode made this reality painfully evident. Since its debut on Prime Video, the satirical superhero series has garnered a dedicated fanbase, largely due to its premise that no beloved hero is guaranteed a happy ending.

With Homelander now in possession of V1 and the stakes at an all-time high, Billy Butcher resorted to a desperate backup plan, utilizing uranium and Russian techniques inspired by Soldier Boy’s experiments to grant Kimiko a power-draining ability. Throughout the perilous procedure, Frenchie remained steadfast by Kimiko’s side, ultimately convincing a hesitant Sister Sage to contribute her expertise, inspired by a heartfelt discussion about love’s power.

The episode, titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk,” directly referenced the original comic book names of Frenchie, Kimiko, and Mother’s Milk, sending fans into a frenzy the moment the title was revealed. Their anxiety was justified: Homelander kills Frenchie in this episode, marking the first death among the core group of heroes in the entire final season.

As Frenchie’s doppler system detected Homelander approaching the hideout in search of Sister Sage after her betrayal, there was no backup and no time to waste. He concealed Kimiko and Sage in a zinc-lined closet, safe from Homelander’s X-ray vision, then bravely stepped out alone to confront the most powerful being on the planet. In true form, he stalled for time by claiming the team had already replicated Soldier Boy’s ability and delivered a hilariously profane one-liner before the fatal confrontation, allowing his loved ones to survive.

Kimiko and Sage emerged from the closet to find Frenchie bleeding on the floor, while Hughie and Butcher arrived just moments too late. He died in Kimiko’s arms, whispering “Mon Coeur,” which means “my heart,” as his final words. The episode concluded with the team devastated by their loss, while Homelander moved closer to total domination as they headed into the finale.

Tomer Capone has portrayed Frenchie since ‘The Boys’ premiered on Prime Video in 2019, and his death signifies the first loss from within the core group of protagonists in the final season. This loss is particularly poignant as Frenchie embodied something unique in the series: not only the team’s intellect but also its emotional core, the warmth that made the group worth fighting for. Showrunner Eric Kripke had cautioned in an interview with Deadline that survival was not guaranteed for anyone in the final season, and Frenchie’s death unmistakably confirms the seriousness of that warning.

Fan reactions online were swift and filled with grief, as viewers pointed to the episode’s chilling title as a warning they had hoped was a false alarm. Reddit threads overflowed with expressions of disbelief and sorrow. Critics have noted that this death serves as the clearest indication yet that the series finale, premiering on Prime Video on May 20 (and in 4DX theaters on May 19), aims to leave no character unscathed. While the radiation experiment may have given Kimiko a fighting chance against Homelander, it cost the Boys their soul.

With just one episode remaining and Homelander nearing godhood, the urgency of who will survive ‘The Boys’ has never been more pressing: will Kimiko’s newfound ability be enough to honor Frenchie’s sacrifice, or is the finale heading toward an even darker conclusion than anyone anticipates?
