‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Star Meryl Streep Skips Met Gala Again—Here’s Why
Major events in the entertainment and fashion industries often come with high expectations. Fans eagerly anticipate which celebrities will attend, their outfits, and any potential surprise appearances. When a well-known figure is rumored to show up at a significant event, it becomes a hot topic long before the actual night.
One such event is the Met Gala, held annually in New York City. Known as one of the most significant nights in fashion, it brings together celebrities, designers, and public figures for a themed evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year, however, one of Hollywood’s most esteemed actors will not be attending the 2026 edition.
A representative for Meryl Streep confirmed that she will not be present at the upcoming event, despite speculation that she might finally make an appearance this year. The rep stated, “Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended. While she appreciates Vogue, Anna [Wintour] and her incredible imagination and stamina—it has never quite been her scene.”
This statement dashed any lingering hopes from fans who wished to see her make a surprise debut on the iconic steps of the museum. Over the years, her absence has been notable, especially as many prominent actors and musicians have attended at least once, often considering it a significant career milestone.
The Met Gala is organized by Vogue under Anna Wintour’s leadership. It serves as a fundraising event for the Costume Institute and takes place every first Monday in May. Each year features a specific theme, and guests are expected to wear outfits that align with or reflect that theme. The event is frequently described as one of the most exclusive gatherings in the fashion world.
Tickets to the gala are extremely pricey and are typically purchased by fashion houses or brands rather than individuals. The night garners extensive media coverage, with outfits and arrivals becoming global talking points almost instantly.
While many celebrities seize the opportunity to make bold fashion statements, Streep has consistently opted for a different path. She is known for being selective about public appearances and prioritizes her film work over red carpet events. Despite her extensive history in Hollywood and strong connections to the fashion industry through her film roles, she has never felt compelled to participate in the gala.
Her ties to the fashion world remain well recognized. In ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, she portrayed Miranda Priestly, a powerful fashion magazine editor. This role became iconic and is often associated with real-life fashion figures, including Anna Wintour, although Streep has clarified that her performance was not intended to directly imitate anyone.
In a recent interview shared by E! News, she discussed her approach to the character, stating, “I was not interested in replicating her; I wanted to make my own person.” She further added, “And as I have gotten to know her over the years, I feel like—my Miranda is fully formed.”
The 2026 Met Gala is expected to uphold its tradition of high-profile guests and meticulously crafted fashion moments. However, as confirmed by her representative, Streep will not be attending, maintaining her long-standing absence from the event.
