‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Star Meryl Streep Will Not Attend Met Gala Amid Bezos Controversy
The upcoming Met Gala is generating buzz for reasons beyond fashion. This year’s event, often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night of the year,” promises a blend of celebrity style and off-camera drama.
With the theme “Fashion Is Art,” the guest list features major names like Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is one of the co-chairs. Designers and entertainers such as Anthony Vaccarello, Doja Cat, Elizabeth Debicki, Teyana Taylor, Lena Dunham, and Zoë Kravitz are also part of the host committee.
However, the spotlight is not solely on the attendees. According to a report, the involvement of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos as co-chairs, along with Amazon as a lead sponsor, has ignited significant online debate. Critics have accused the couple of “buying their way into culture,” adding to the event’s tension.
Questions also arise regarding Amazon’s influence on attendance. A protest group known as Everyone Hates Elon has been posting messages in New York, including “Boycott the Bezos Met Ball,” which has intensified the pressure surrounding the gala. Social media has humorously suggested that celebrities attending could be “Bezos-listed,” a term gaining traction online.
Several notable figures are already expected to skip the event. Zendaya, a regular attendee in previous years, is not on the guest list this time. Lady Gaga’s participation remains uncertain, as her name has not been confirmed.
Another significant absence is Meryl Streep. Although she was reportedly invited to co-chair the event, she has chosen not to attend. Sources, including Amy Odell, who has covered Anna Wintour, indicate that Streep may be uncomfortable with Bezos’ involvement, reflecting her past openness about political views.
Conversely, some stars are still expected to make an appearance. Emily Blunt is reportedly attending, while her husband John Krasinski will not. Seth Meyers is also anticipated, along with designer Tom Ford, who is making a rare public appearance. Blunt is said to be seated near Ford during the event.
Fashion partnerships will play a significant role this year. Nicole Kidman is closely associated with Chanel, Zoë Kravitz with Saint Laurent, and Anne Hathaway with Prada. With Anthony Vaccarello helping host, Saint Laurent is expected to dominate the red carpet.
There is also curiosity about what celebrities will don under this year’s theme. Expectations include references to fashion history, surrealist designs, art-inspired gowns, or famous designer collaborations tied to artists.
Even tech figures may make an appearance, as several Silicon Valley names have recently been spotted at fashion events. Reports suggest they might attend dressed in more curated outfits than their usual casual attire.
Overall, this year’s Met Gala is shaping up to be about more than just fashion. It is evolving into a mix of style, business, and online controversy, all centered around one of the most talked-about nights in entertainment.
