‘The Dog Stars’ Director Ridley Scott Declares He’ll Never Retire, Here’s Why
Hollywood is filled with legendary directors who eventually choose to step back, allowing their extensive body of work to speak for itself. However, Ridley Scott has never adhered to that narrative, and at nearly 89 years old, he is making it abundantly clear that he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
Scott’s career has spanned over fifty years, delivering genre-defining films across sci-fi, historical epics, and crime dramas. Even as he nears an age when most filmmakers have long since exited the director’s chair, his prolific output shows no signs of diminishing.
In a recent interview, Scott tackled the topic of retirement directly, providing a clear and resolute response. “I despise the idea of quitting,” he stated during his conversation with Il Venerdì di Repubblica.
He elaborated further, expressing his disdain for the term “retirement,” which he feels carries a connotation akin to a death sentence. Scott intends to remain active in filmmaking for as long as his health permits.
This philosophy aligns perfectly with a career that has shown no signs of slowing down as he approaches his ninth decade. Following the release of ‘Gladiator II,’ Scott has a full schedule ahead, with his post-apocalyptic sci-fi film ‘The Dog Stars’ set to premiere in August, alongside a new adaptation of ‘Treasure Island’ featuring Hugh Jackman already in pre-production.
In addition to his upcoming projects, Scott discussed his long-awaited recognition from the film industry. After four nominations without a win throughout his extensive directing career, he is set to receive an honorary Academy Award this November. His reaction to finally receiving this accolade was refreshingly straightforward, simply stating that it was about time.
For Scott, however, the award is not the main focus. He has emphasized that commercial success, cultural impact, and providing jobs for hundreds of crew members matter far more to him than any individual trophy.
Scott has also been vocal about his concerns regarding the current state of Hollywood, previously commenting that the industry is drowning in mediocrity due to the sheer volume of films being produced today. His solution has involved revisiting his own back catalog, admitting that rewatching films like ‘Black Hawk Down’ surprised him with how well his earlier work has stood the test of time.
This restless energy has also kept the door open for further entries in his most iconic franchise. Scott has confirmed that he is already developing ideas for a potential third ‘Gladiator’ film, inspired by the emotional depth of ‘The Godfather Part II’ and centered around a character who finds himself in an unwanted position.
With multiple major projects lined up and a filmmaking philosophy focused on forward momentum, Scott shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. For a director who has spent decades reshaping entire genres, the notion of stepping away seems less like a possibility and more like something he simply refuses to consider.
