Netflix has established a reputation for surprising audiences with high-budget originals that launch with little fanfare yet quickly dominate viewing charts. This trend continues with the release of its latest sci-fi thriller, which transforms a chilling narrative about domestic entrapment into one of the platform’s most significant debuts of the year.

The film, titled ‘The Last House,’ is directed by Louis Leterrier and features Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as parents striving to safeguard their family after they find themselves mysteriously trapped inside their own home. As the story unfolds, the family grapples with dwindling resources and an unseen, looming threat, compelling them to depend on one another while their close-knit relationships begin to unravel under the strain.

Since its release on August 7, the film has emerged as a true viewership powerhouse. According to Variety, ‘The Last House’ garnered 27.5 million views within its first three days of streaming, easily securing the top position on Netflix’s viewership rankings for the week of August 3 through 9, not only as the leading English-language film but also as the platform’s most-watched title overall.

This impressive view count ranks the film among the year’s most successful Netflix originals, marking it as the platform’s fifth most-watched movie debut of 2026. It joins the ranks of fellow Chernin Entertainment production ‘Apex,’ which set a high bar earlier this year with an astounding 38.2 million-view opening in April.

Part of the excitement surrounding the film’s release can be attributed to Netflix’s unique promotional strategy, which included a striking billboard stunt on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The streamer hired a man to live inside the billboard, creating a direct connection to the film’s theme of forced confinement. This eerie publicity tactic helped generate buzz well before the movie’s debut.

Director Louis Leterrier, known for works like ‘Now You See Me’ and ‘Lupin,’ described the film as a challenge to the notion of a safe haven, transforming a family home into a perilous environment where survival hinges on unity. In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, he elaborated that the story taps into the worst fears of an ordinary family, highlighting the fragility of security and the desperate struggle to reclaim it.

Moura echoed Leterrier’s sentiments in his comments to Tudum, expressing his fascination with the idea of waking up one day physically sealed inside one’s home without any explanation. He shared a deep connection with his character and the film’s stakes, contemplating how his own family would react in such an impossible scenario.

With the film continuing to lead Netflix’s charts long after its opening weekend and comparisons being drawn to the isolation experienced during pandemic-era lockdowns, ‘The Last House’ appears set to remain one of the platform’s standout releases for the remainder of the year.
