‘The Love Hypothesis’ Officially Receives Its Rotten Tomatoes Score
Rom-com enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of ‘The Love Hypothesis’ on Prime Video, and the moment has finally arrived. Based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, which spent an impressive 10 months on the New York Times Best Seller list after its 2021 release, the story has roots in Reylo fan fiction inspired by the beloved ‘Star Wars’ characters Rey and Kylo Ren.
The highly anticipated film debuted on Prime Video on September 23, featuring Lili Reinhart as PhD candidate Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as the formidable professor Dr. Adam Carlsen. Directed by Claire Scanlon, known for her work on the rom-com hit ‘Set It Up’, the adaptation is brought to life through a script by Sarah Rothschild.
Rotten Tomatoes has officially certified the film, confirming the positive buzz from early reviews. ‘The Love Hypothesis’ is now Certified Fresh, boasting a score of 76%. The site’s consensus notes that while the film follows a familiar rom-com formula, its blend of humor and the undeniable chemistry between Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman makes it a delightful comfort watch.
Critics have largely responded positively, with many praising the performances of the lead actors. IGN’s Tara Bennett awarded the film an 8 out of 10, describing it as “a funny, sexy rom-com adaptation from page to screen,” and highlighted how “Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman bring the comedy and heat to Olive and Adam.”

Collider’s Carly Lane echoed this sentiment with her own score of 8 out of 10, calling the film “a successful experiment led by Reinhart and Bateman, and another mostly solid addition to the rom-com genre.” Similarly, RogerEbert.com’s Marya E. Gates praised Scanlon for “effortlessly balancing a large ensemble of colorful side characters.”
However, not all critics were impressed. Mashable’s Belen Edwards remarked that the film lacked “one key ingredient that would truly make its experiment stick the landing: yearning,” while Screen Rant’s Liz Declan offered a more critical view, giving the film a 4 out of 10 and citing a lack of chemistry between the leads.
Audience reactions on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter have been favorable, landing around 78%, closely mirroring the critics’ score. Some viewers commended the adaptation for capturing the book’s charm, while others felt that the pacing was too rushed compared to the original material.
In addition to Reinhart and Bateman, the film features a talented ensemble cast, including Rachel Marsh as Olive’s best friend Anh, along with Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White, and Arty Froushan. Reinhart also takes on the role of executive producer for the project, alongside her performance.
The film has a runtime of 110 to 112 minutes and was produced by MRC, Bisous Pictures, and The Cantillon Company for Amazon MGM Studios.
For a highly anticipated adaptation, achieving Certified Fresh status is a significant validation. Prime Video has established a reputation for successful book-to-screen romances, and ‘The Love Hypothesis’ now joins that expanding catalog with critical acclaim that aligns with its built-in audience.
