‘The Odyssey’ Eyes Record-Breaking Finish at the Worldwide Box Office
Christopher Nolan has built a reputation for creating theatrical experiences that challenge conventional box office trends, and ‘The Odyssey’ is no exception. This nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has spent the summer demonstrating that adult-oriented spectacles can still attract large audiences, even in a market dominated by franchise sequels and comic book adaptations.
The film’s success has accelerated since it expanded into international markets. ‘The Odyssey’ has already become Nolan’s highest-grossing film, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ after just four weekends in theaters, according to Deadline. It crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide faster than any of Nolan’s releases since 2012, with Universal now counting it among the studio’s biggest hits of the year.
As ‘The Odyssey’ continued its rollout across Asia, its worldwide total climbed to approximately $1.17 billion even before its full release in China. The film’s opening in mainland China has significantly exceeded expectations, with early previews and presales ranking among the strongest post-pandemic debuts for a Hollywood film in that market. With China now fully engaged and upcoming releases in Japan and South Korea, industry analysts are projecting the film could ultimately reach around $1.6 billion worldwide.
This projection would position ‘The Odyssey’ well ahead of Universal’s previous benchmarks for the year, making it one of the studio’s biggest all-time global releases before any inflation adjustments. The film’s performance in China has already outstripped the opening weekends of major franchise titles like ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ within its first two days.

Much of this international success can be attributed to the film’s outstanding performance in premium large-format theaters. ‘The Odyssey’ has already become Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time worldwide, and its rollout in China heavily utilized this strategy, securing approximately 90% of the country’s nearly 800-screen Imax network despite competition from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’
Media Partners Asia senior analyst Adrian Tong told Variety that Nolan’s box office history in China, where ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Tenet’ each finished around $61 million, provides a useful benchmark for expectations, noting that a nine-figure run in the country would be an exceptional outcome given how rarely Hollywood films outside the biggest franchises achieve that level there.
What makes ‘The Odyssey’s’ trajectory particularly remarkable is its genre. Sword-and-sandal epics rarely receive blockbuster-scale budgets or marketing pushes today, and the film’s R rating further limits its audience compared to typical summer blockbusters. Despite these challenges, ‘The Odyssey’ has maintained impressive week-over-week stability, with its second weekend drop at just 30%, a notably gentler decline than Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer’ during its record-breaking run in 2023.
With China, Japan, and South Korea still contributing to its total and Imax demand showing no signs of slowing, ‘The Odyssey’ is increasingly poised to conclude its theatrical run as one of the defining box office stories of Nolan’s career.
