Seven weekends into its theatrical release, many blockbusters typically experience a predictable decline, making way for new entries on the release calendar. However, Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic has been rewriting expectations for what a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of ancient Greek poetry can achieve at the global box office.

This defiance of standard box office trends has become a key storyline for industry observers. Week after week, ‘The Odyssey’ has demonstrated remarkable holds, especially for a film centered on Matt Damon’s arduous journey home as Odysseus, rather than relying on the usual franchise-driven excitement.

This past weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ reached a significant milestone, officially crossing the $1.5 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The film earned an impressive $49.3 million internationally during its seventh weekend, marking only a 27.5% drop from the previous week, a performance that compares favorably to ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ 23% decline during a similar phase of its historic run.

This international success pushed the film’s overseas total past $989 million across 82 markets, with significant territories like Japan still set to open in September. Combined with its $563.9 million domestic gross, ‘The Odyssey’ has now achieved a global total of $1.55 billion on a reported $250 million production budget, officially surpassing ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘The Avengers’ to become the 14th highest-grossing film in box office history.

The film’s ascent in the all-time rankings holds additional significance for its studio. ‘The Odyssey’ has now overtaken ‘Furious 7’s’ $1.52 billion earnings to become Universal’s second-biggest release ever, trailing only behind ‘Jurassic World’ in the studio’s history.

What makes this run particularly remarkable is how it has exceeded expectations set just weeks prior. Industry analysts had predicted a ceiling of $1.7 billion for the film’s global potential just two weeks ago, but that figure has now become a new baseline given the film’s impressive international legs.

Demand for premium formats has continued to fuel this staying power. IMAX has extended the film’s run in several markets through the end of September, and with Japan still set to contribute to the box office, the film’s final tally could rise significantly before its theatrical run concludes.

Current industry estimates suggest that ‘The Odyssey’s’ eventual global total could range between $1.75 billion and $1.9 billion, a figure that would have seemed nearly impossible for an original, adult-oriented epic at the beginning of the summer season. The film crossed $1.6 billion just this past weekend, according to the latest tracking data.

For Nolan, this achievement adds another record to an already historic career, having already established ‘The Odyssey’ as his highest-grossing film ever earlier this summer. For an industry still striving to prove that original theatrical spectacles can attract large audiences without a built-in franchise, ‘The Odyssey’ serves as compelling evidence that viewers are eager to attend when the ambition aligns with the scale.
