The summer movie season has already brought its share of surprises, but few directors can generate the kind of global excitement that Christopher Nolan does. His name alone has become a powerful marketing asset, transforming an ancient Greek epic into one of the most anticipated theatrical events of the year. This reputation faced a significant test this weekend, and the results have left industry observers amazed.

Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ finally premiered internationally after a rollout that began weeks earlier with a London premiere. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, the film had already gained momentum through sold-out IMAX 70mm screenings and positive early reviews.

Universal invested 250 million dollars in production and an additional 125 million dollars in marketing, making this weekend’s performance a critical moment.

And it was indeed a pivotal moment. ‘The Odyssey’ earned 139.6 million dollars from 73 international markets, leading to a worldwide opening of 264.1 million dollars when combined with its 124.5 million dollar domestic total. That international figure alone marks Nolan’s largest overseas debut to date, achieved without yet releasing in Korea, China, or Japan, three significant markets still set to open later this year.

This global total places ‘The Odyssey’ ahead of all previous Nolan films at the worldwide box office, surpassing the 180.4 million dollar opening of ‘Oppenheimer’ in 2023. It also outshines the openings of both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ the two Batman films that previously represented the pinnacle of Nolan’s box office success. For a director known for his work in Gotham City, witnessing an original epic outperform his own superhero trilogy is a remarkable achievement.

The film’s rating adds another layer to this accomplishment. As an R-rated release, ‘The Odyssey’ now ranks among the largest global openings ever for that category, trailing only the Deadpool franchise in terms of worldwide box office. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ still holds the top spot with its 444.1 million dollar global debut, followed by ‘Deadpool 2’ at 301.3 million dollars and the original ‘Deadpool’ at 265 million dollars.

Right behind those films is ‘The Odyssey,’ which has already outpaced the global openings of both ‘Logan’ and ‘Joker,’ two films that once set the standard for what an adult-oriented genre film could achieve at the box office.

Beyond the franchise comparisons, ‘The Odyssey’ is also ranking among the biggest global openings of the year overall. Only ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ have opened larger worldwide in 2026, and both of those are family-friendly animated films with a much broader built-in audience than an R-rated retelling of a three-thousand-year-old poem. This context makes Nolan’s accomplishment even more impressive, as he achieved this opening with a challenging, adult-oriented narrative and no established franchise to rely on.

With Korea, China, and Japan still ahead on the release schedule, there is genuine reason to believe these numbers will continue to rise before ‘The Odyssey’ concludes its theatrical run. Coupled with the absence of significant new competition in the coming weeks, the film seems poised for a lengthy and profitable run in theaters. Fans and industry analysts are now closely monitoring to see just how high this odyssey can ultimately ascend.
