‘The Odyssey’ Surpasses ‘The Dark Knight’ as Christopher Nolan’s Top Domestic Hit
Few directors have crafted a box office legacy as remarkable as Christopher Nolan, whose filmography resembles a highlight reel of iconic blockbusters. For nearly two decades, one specific Batman film has remained at the pinnacle of that legacy, seemingly invulnerable to any competition from his other works.
That era has now officially concluded. Nolan’s mythological epic has methodically ascended through his own box office history throughout its theatrical run, breaking record after record with a consistency that few films can maintain this far into their release.
According to reports, ‘The Odyssey’ has officially outperformed ‘The Dark Knight’ to become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film at the domestic box office. This milestone was reached during the film’s sixth weekend in theaters, where it added another 19.5 million dollars domestically, bringing its cumulative North American total to 539 million dollars, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight’s’ 534.9 million dollar benchmark set back in 2008.
This achievement caps off a run in which ‘The Odyssey’ has already surpassed nearly every other domestic milestone in Nolan’s career. Just weeks prior, the film overtook ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to become his second-highest-grossing domestic release, before ultimately climbing past ‘The Dark Knight’ itself to claim the top position.
The domestic milestone adds to a series of records ‘The Odyssey’ has already claimed on the global stage. The film has become Nolan’s highest-grossing release worldwide after crossing 1.1 billion dollars, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and its previous 1.085 billion dollar worldwide total.
Moreover, ‘The Odyssey’ has also become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history worldwide, unadjusted for inflation, after exceeding ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ 1.338 billion dollar global total. This places it in an exclusive club of only three R-rated films to ever cross the billion-dollar mark globally, alongside ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Joker.’ Domestically, however, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ still holds the R-rated crown with 636.7 million dollars, a record ‘The Odyssey’ has yet to surpass.

Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures, attributed the film’s sustained success to Nolan’s established rapport with audiences. “Christopher Nolan has earned audiences’ trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events, and ‘The Odyssey’ is him operating at the peak of his powers,” Orr stated in comments reported by Yahoo Entertainment.
Featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, ‘The Odyssey’ has become the highest-grossing film in the careers of Damon, Hathaway, and Pattinson. This is a remarkable feat for an adult-oriented drama running nearly three hours long, based on a poem nearly 3,000 years old, a combination that typically wouldn’t guarantee such commercial success.
The film’s IMAX performance has also been historic, generating 289.3 million dollars in global ticket sales, officially making ‘The Odyssey’ IMAX’s highest-grossing release of all time, surpassing ‘Avatar’s’ long-standing record. It is also the first narrative feature ever shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, a technical distinction that has fueled repeat viewings among audiences eager to experience the film in its intended format.
With Nolan’s collective filmography now exceeding 7 billion dollars worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has solidified itself as the definitive commercial peak of his career, both domestically and globally. For a filmmaker whose reputation has always been built on delivering must-see theatrical experiences, this latest record only reinforces how firmly that reputation continues to hold.
