The Real Reason Why ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 4 Is Being Cancelled
Marvel Television has been quietly refining its Disney+ offerings over the past two years, shifting from a strategy that emphasized quantity to one focused on quality. What started as an ambitious plan to create an interconnected streaming universe has gradually narrowed down to a select few tightly managed projects.
Until recently, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ appeared to be one of the more secure titles in this reduced lineup. With Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, it was seen as a flagship revival of Marvel’s street-level storytelling. However, the situation took a surprising turn as a third season was already deep into production.
This sense of security was shattered this week when sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the third season will be the last, effectively closing the door on any potential for a fourth season. This decision comes just two months after filming for the third season concluded, making the timing particularly shocking given the production’s progress.
While Marvel has not provided an official statement regarding the cancellation, exclusive data from analytics firm Luminate sheds light on the likely reasons behind the decision. According to figures tracking the first five episodes of each season, Season 2 garnered 4,515,000 total views, a significant drop from Season 1’s 8,357,000 during the same period, reflecting a decline of approximately 46%.
The decline appears even more pronounced when analyzed episode by episode. Season 1 debuted with 1,904,000 views in its premiere week, tapering off to 1,069,000 by week five. In contrast, Season 2 started with only 927,000 views and fell to 616,000 by its fifth week.
Total hours viewed also tell a troubling story, plummeting from 1,440,004,000 minutes in Season 1’s initial stretch to just 652,000,000 minutes for Season 2, marking a decline of about 54%. Notably, Season 2 did not make it into Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming originals during its premiere week, a benchmark that even less popular Marvel shows have managed to achieve in the past.

What makes these numbers particularly painful is that Season 2 did not represent a creative decline. It boasts an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, just slightly below Season 1’s 87%. This indicates that the drop in viewership was less about the show’s quality and more about audience engagement.

This disconnect between critical acclaim and viewership is becoming an increasingly common narrative in streaming, where even well-received shows can struggle to maintain their audience into subsequent seasons.

With Season 3 already filmed and set to premiere in March 2027, fans will have one last opportunity to enjoy the performances of Cox and D’Onofrio before the series concludes. It’s a bittersweet farewell for a show that successfully revived key characters from the original Netflix ‘Daredevil’ series.
