Thragg Killed Battle Beast in One of ‘Invincible’s Most Savage Comic Showdowns
Few confrontations in ‘Invincible’ carry the legendary significance of the clash between Grand Regent Thragg and the fierce warrior Thokk, known to fans as Battle Beast. For years, comic enthusiasts eagerly anticipated whether the universe’s most brutal fighter could challenge the strongest Viltrumite in a genuine battle, and Robert Kirkman ultimately provided an answer that left both characters irrevocably altered.
Indeed, the question that fans have been asking has a clear answer. Thragg did kill Battle Beast, and the manner in which it occurred has become one of the most talked-about moments in the entire series. The encounter was brutal, spanning several issues, and concluded with a gruesome trophy that Thragg would carry for the remainder of the series.
The journey to the duel began when Allen the Alien assigned Battle Beast the mission he had long desired. Allen informed Battle Beast of Thragg’s exile and tasked him with eliminating the deposed Grand Regent, prompting a sadistic smile from Thokk as he accepted the challenge. He tracked Thragg to the planet Thraxa, where Thragg was busy breeding a hybrid army by impregnating Thraxan women.
What started as a death sentence quickly evolved into a complex battle. Thragg attempted to recruit Battle Beast by promising more bloodshed against the Coalition, but Battle Beast retorted that he would write his answer with Thragg’s entrails. This verbal exchange set the stage for a prolonged ordeal of sheer carnage.
Then came the twist that defined the entire encounter. A group of Ragnars, controlled by the Coalition, ambushed Thragg, infuriating Battle Beast as the interruption threatened to rob him of his glory. Battle Beast immediately began aiding Thragg in eliminating the Ragnars, determined not to let anything interfere with their personal duel. This decision astonished even the Grand Regent, who called him a fool.
Once the Ragnar interruption concluded, Battle Beast reaffirmed the warrior code that defined him. Unwilling to face a weakened opponent, he opened his own guts to level the playing field, as Thragg had already been disemboweled during the ambush. The image of him gutting himself remains one of the most disturbing panels in the entire series.
The fight escalated to unprecedented levels rarely seen in superhero comics. Although Thragg initially appeared to have the upper hand, Battle Beast retaliated by biting Thragg’s head and gouging out one of the Viltrumite’s eyes. The battle raged on for days, destroying entire cities. This epic duel spanned five issues of the series, with ‘Invincible’ periodically checking in on its progress alongside the main storylines.

The conclusion arrived in ‘Invincible’ #120. Before his demise, Battle Beast expressed gratitude to Thragg for providing him with a worthy opponent, and Thragg crushed his heart, successfully killing the formidable warrior before succumbing to his own injuries and losing consciousness. The Thraxans then removed the broken Grand Regent from the planet and incinerated the legendary warrior’s body in celebration.
The grim aftermath is still a topic of conversation among fans. Thragg had Battle Beast’s hide removed and wore it as a cape adorned with a golden Viltrum Empire symbol. This trophy became a lasting reminder of just how dangerous the deposed Grand Regent truly was.
The Amazon series has been carefully pacing the warrior’s storyline. Michael Dorn’s Battle Beast made his return in ‘Invincible’ Season 3, Episode 4, “You Were My Hero,” when Allen the Alien freed him from Viltrumite imprisonment, promising worthy opponents for his strength. This episode reintroduced a savage level of violence to the show.
The duel itself has yet to be animated, as the source material is still several arcs away. In the Amazon Prime Video animated series, the Thragg vs. Battle Beast fight remains a distant prospect, with much of the recent episodes focusing on other threats. The fourth season premiered on March 18, 2026, with its first three episodes, while the remaining episodes will be released weekly until the finale on April 22.
Battle Beast’s imprisonment is one significant piece of new material introduced in the show. In the comics, he was rescued during the Viltrumite War, but in the series, he was freed after the Invincible War. Kirkman has utilized this gap to expand the warrior’s mythology in print rather than on screen.
Even after the demise of his most popular side character, Kirkman couldn’t let Thokk fade away. In an interview with SlashFilm, the writer revealed that the new ongoing series ‘Invincible Universe: Battle Beast’ aims to bridge the significant narrative gap between the warrior’s comic appearances in issues 19 and 55. The book was released in print and digital formats on May 14, 2025, with co-creator Ryan Ottley returning to illustrate.
The hide isn’t the only remnant of Battle Beast that survived him. In ‘Invincible’ #144, readers learned that Battle Beast had a daughter cursed with the same thirst for violence. After restoring peace to her own world, she set out to hunt down the remaining Viltrumites responsible for her father’s death.
This unresolved storyline is precisely the kind of seed Kirkman enjoys planting for future narratives. Whether the show will eventually incorporate her into the animated continuity or save her for a Skybound spinoff remains uncertain. Regardless, the daughter ensures that the Battle Beast legacy is far from over in this universe.
Now that the animated series has laid the groundwork for a future confrontation on Thraxa, we want to know which specific moment from that bloody comic finale you most hope the animation team captures when they finally animate Thokk’s last stand.
