Timothée Chalamet recently found himself at the center of a heated online debate after receiving the satirical title of “White Boy of the Year.” The award was originally presented to him in October by YouTuber Anthony Edwards during the “Believe That Awards.”

While the actor initially embraced the joke with humor, his subsequent comments have not sat well with everyone. During a recent appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast with Carmelo Anthony, Chalamet discussed the title and his connection to the community.

He admitted to the hosts that accepting the label involves walking a “fine line” between humor and respect. However, he then added that despite wanting to say “all the sh*t you’re supposed to say,” he is simply a “fan of Black culture and hip hop.”

Social media users were quick to criticize his phrasing, particularly his dismissal of respectful terminology as “blah blah blah.” Critics on platforms like Reddit argued that he sounded “insufferable” and warned that he might be damaging his reputation.

Others took specific issue with how he seemed to equate Black culture almost exclusively with hip hop music. One commenter pointed out that reducing a diverse culture to a single genre suggests he might not be as knowledgeable as he claims.

Prior to this backlash, Chalamet had accepted the award playfully via a video call from Budapest, where he is filming the Dune sequel. He even thanked other famous men who “paved the way” for him, listing Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran among his inspirations.

He also took to Instagram to share a humorous quote about “getting lost in the sauce,” promising to inspire future generations of white men to be “delusional” about their place in the world. What started as a self-aware joke appears to have soured for some fans following his podcast interview.

Do you think Chalamet’s comments were out of line or is the internet overreacting to his statement? Tell us your opinion in the comments.
