Magazine cover shoots have become a reliable indicator that a major star is preparing for a significant fall release, and few actors utilize this platform as effectively as Tom Cruise. His latest spread arrives at the perfect time, just weeks before one of his most anticipated films in years hits theaters.

Photographer Mario Sorrenti captured Cruise in a striking new series for GQ, featuring everything from moody driving shots to a black-and-white studio collection that emphasizes raw, stripped-down portraiture. The visuals are darker and more atmospheric than Cruise’s usual action-hero press cycle, suggesting a project that pushes him into uncharted territory.

That project is ‘Digger,’ Cruise’s first collaboration with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, set to arrive in theaters on October 2. In the film, Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, described in the marketing as the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a desperate mission to convince humanity he’s its savior after causing a global catastrophe.

The film marks a notable shift from the franchise-driven action roles that have characterized much of Cruise’s recent career, including ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series. Described as a satirical black comedy with apocalyptic themes, ‘Digger’ required Cruise to undergo a physical transformation using prosthetics and makeup, distancing him from his usual on-screen persona more than audiences have seen in years.

Cruise has expressed a desire to work with Iñárritu for decades, and their collaboration finally materialized after the director presented him with the script, reading it to him line by line over several days—a process Cruise reportedly requests from all his collaborators. Reflecting on the experience, Cruise noted that it felt as though every skill he’d honed over his forty-five-year acting career had been leading to this specific performance, according to reporting from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Iñárritu echoed that sentiment, describing Cruise’s transformation into the role as remarkable. Both he and Cruise recognized the significance of carrying an entire career into a single defining moment like this.

‘Digger’ features a stellar ensemble cast alongside Cruise, including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emma D’Arcy. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, with a screenplay credited to Iñárritu alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman.

The timing of Cruise’s GQ spread coincides with a broader moment of recognition for the actor, who recently received an honorary Oscar at the Governor’s Awards, presented directly by Iñárritu ahead of their collaboration’s release. This honor, combined with early buzz suggesting ‘Digger’ could position Cruise for his first competitive Academy Award nomination, has made this fall’s promotional rollout feel more significant than a typical Cruise release cycle.

With striking new imagery from GQ and a role designed to challenge audience expectations, Cruise seems to be positioning ‘Digger’ as a true turning point rather than just another late-career action film.
