Crime dramas thrive on the tension of keeping their central antihero ahead of those trying to take him down. ‘MobLand’ crafted its first season around this very dynamic, showcasing Tom Hardy’s fixer character as someone who always seemed to possess the upper hand.

This advantage made Harry Da Souza an intriguing character, as he rarely appeared shaken, regardless of the perilous situations he faced. However, Season 2 is set to alter that dynamic significantly, as revealed by Hardy.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Tom Hardy explained that ‘MobLand’ Season 2 changes Harry in a crucial way. He described the character as someone who “is often five steps ahead” due to his unique “ability to prepare.” However, this new season strips that advantage away entirely, placing Harry “on the back foot” for the first time.

Hardy noted that showrunner Jez Butterworth designed the new season to dismantle the fragile order Harry established by the end of Season 1. Instead of allowing his character to continue from a position of strength, the story compels him to react under pressure, rather than anticipate threats as he once did.

Hardy described the pacing of the new episodes as unlike anything the show has attempted before, calling it more kinetic than previous installments. Harry is pulled across various locations while struggling to maintain composure with less time to think things through. This tonal shift reflects a conscious decision to elevate the stakes as the new season unfolds.

Part of the chaos stems from a formidable new threat that Butterworth apparently introduced during the show’s first season, now coming into sharper focus. Rather than presenting a completely new villain, the season builds tension around a character who had previously loomed as a shadow in Season 1, providing long-time viewers with a payoff rooted in earlier developments.

Johnny Flynn joins the cast, intensifying the threat and adding another layer of danger to a narrative already shaken by the internal fractures within the Harrigan crime family. With pressures mounting from both the Harrigans and Harry’s own circle, nearly every character faces significant external challenges this season.

The turmoil extends beyond gang warfare and criminal power struggles. Joanne Froggatt’s character, Jan, stabs her own husband early in the new season, instantly reshaping the dynamics within the Da Souza household and heightening the personal stakes in the already tense atmosphere.

Additionally, Harry’s daughter Gina, portrayed by Teddie Allen, appears to be drifting closer to following in her father’s criminal footsteps, complicating the family drama that has always paralleled the show’s larger crime narrative. With Paddy Considine’s Kevin pursuing an assassination plot against his own father, it becomes evident just how many fronts Harry must manage this season.

Janet McTeer’s Kat and Toby Jones’ Colin complete a supporting cast whose motivations further complicate an already intricate web of threats. With multiple crises unfolding simultaneously, Butterworth’s script seems crafted to keep every character, not just Harry, operating without the luxury of a clear plan.

Removing a character’s greatest strength is a classic technique to inject new tension into a long-running narrative, and ‘MobLand’ seems to fully embrace this strategy for its sophomore season. Watching someone as calculated as Harry forced into reactive, high-pressure situations promises a different viewing experience compared to the more controlled tension of Season 1.

With Paramount+ heavily investing in this new season and a third season already confirmed, ‘MobLand’ aims to keep its central character perpetually off balance as the stakes continue to rise.

This confidence in renewal is well-founded. The show’s first season premiered to over 2.2 million viewers and amassed more than 26 million total views, making it one of Paramount+’s standout performers to date. Such a track record allows the creative team to take greater risks with Harry’s arc without fearing a loss of audience investment.
