Tom Holland Shares Insight on the MCU’s Symbiote Suit Update
Marvel enthusiasts have long speculated about when Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might don the iconic black symbiote suit, a storyline hinted at since a piece of Venom was left behind in the MCU during ‘No Way Home.’ As Holland approaches a decade in the role, the anticipation has only intensified with each new press cycle.
This week, Holland participated in an in-depth, career-spanning discussion reflecting on nearly ten years as Peter Parker. Amid stories about his early auditions and his emotional death scene in ‘Infinity War,’ the conversation naturally shifted to what fans are eager to see next, including that long-anticipated black suit.
Instead of evading the topic, Holland provided a surprisingly honest explanation for why bringing the symbiote suit to life on screen is more complicated than fans might think. Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused, Holland expressed uncertainty about how the MCU would adapt the look, particularly noting how effectively it has been portrayed in other media.
“They did it so well in the game and I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar without having a CG component,” Holland explained, referencing the acclaimed depiction of the symbiote suit in recent Spider-Man video games. His comment underscores a real creative challenge: translating a design based on fluid, organic movement into something practical for live-action filming.

This challenge is not just theoretical for Holland. Live-action Spider-Man has only featured the symbiote suit once before, in 2007’s ‘Spider-Man 3,’ and recreating that alien, shifting texture convincingly on screen has become increasingly complex as fan expectations have evolved alongside video game and animated portrayals of the character.
Holland’s remarks coincide with ongoing hints from Marvel’s producers regarding the symbiote’s future in the franchise. During the same press cycle, Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal both addressed questions about a potential Venom crossover on the podcast, with Feige offering an optimistic but noncommittal “Always have hope,” while Pascal echoed that sentiment, expressing that she and the studio remain hopeful as well.
This blend of interest from the studio’s top decision-makers and genuine creative uncertainty from its leading man paints a complex picture of the current status of this storyline. It suggests that the desire to eventually bring the symbiote into live action is genuine, but the execution remains a challenging puzzle even among those closest to the project.
Holland has been addressing variations of this question throughout the entire ‘Brand New Day’ press tour, previously telling a young fan during a Cinépolis event in Mexico that he couldn’t confirm whether the suit would appear in the new film, though he remained optimistic that audiences would see it eventually. His latest comments add a layer of technical honesty to that ongoing tease, suggesting that the delay may be as much about the craft as it is about the timing of the story.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now swinging into theaters and Avengers: Secret Wars still on the horizon, fans have plenty of future opportunities to finally see Holland’s Peter Parker in black. Whether Marvel can solve the CG-versus-practical dilemma Holland described remains to be seen, but it’s clear the studio isn’t ruling it out.
