Superhero franchises often emphasize the strength of their ensembles, but sometimes the numbers reveal that one actor is shouldering more of the burden than their co-stars. This ongoing discussion about Tom Holland has gained substantial traction this week, bolstered by some compelling data.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has made waves at the box office since its release, rewriting records and sparking curiosity about the reasons behind its impressive turnout. The answer seems to point directly to Holland’s star power.

According to PostTrak exit polling reported by Deadline, 39% of ticket buyers cited Tom Holland as a primary reason for attending ‘Brand New Day,’ a statistic that ranks among the highest for a lead actor in a comic book film. Zendaya followed closely with 29%, a remarkable figure for a supporting role.

These individual attractions complement broader motivations from moviegoers. Among those surveyed, 58% indicated that the film is part of a beloved franchise, 47% said it appeared fun and entertaining, and 41% mentioned the cast as a whole as their reason for purchasing a ticket, illustrating an audience drawn in by both the character’s legacy and the actors portraying him.

Holland’s individual appeal becomes even more significant when compared to the film’s other stars. While comparable figures for Mark Ruffalo or Jon Bernthal are not available, Holland and Zendaya’s numbers provide clear evidence of star power driving ticket sales for this release.

The exit poll data further confirms the film’s positive reception among viewers. PostTrak recorded an 88% definite recommend score, closely trailing ‘No Way Home’s’ 90%, while the film earned its fourth A CinemaScore among Holland’s Spider-Man films, just behind ‘No Way Home’s’ A+.

Demographic breakdowns reveal that the film skews slightly older than its predecessor, with the 18-24 age group making up 36% of the audience compared to 42% for ‘No Way Home,’ alongside a 61% to 39% male-to-female ratio. The film’s family-friendly appeal has also contributed to its success, with PLF screens accounting for 24% of the weekend’s gross and 3D contributing another 17%, despite the absence of IMAX due to ‘The Odyssey’s’ ongoing exclusive run in that format.

This opening has already made history, with ‘Brand New Day’ achieving a domestic total significantly surpassing ‘No Way Home’s’ $260.1 million debut, marking a record start for both director Destin Daniel Cretton and Zendaya, and the second-best opening of Holland’s career, only behind his role in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

As the franchise enters its eleventh live-action film, Holland’s ability to draw such strong numbers underscores his central role in the character’s ongoing box office success. Whatever lies ahead for Peter Parker, this weekend has made one thing abundantly clear: audiences are coming out specifically for him.
