Sylvester Stallone has successfully transitioned to television with his role as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York mafia capo exiled to Oklahoma, making ‘Tulsa King’ one of Paramount+’s standout hits.

The show’s popularity is evident, as it was reported to be Paramount’s most-watched original series in a recent year, boasting a remarkable 21.1 million global streaming viewers for its season 2 premiere.

In a significant development, Deadline announced on October 5 that Paramount+ has renewed ‘Tulsa King’ for a fifth season, a decision made before the premiere of the fourth season.

As reported by Deadline, the filming location will shift from Atlanta to New York, allowing the storyline to delve into Dwight’s mafia origins. Drew Brown, an executive vice president at Paramount Television Studios, expressed excitement about providing fans with more of this captivating series.

This change is both creative and practical. Variety noted that a writers’ room for the upcoming season opened in June, with the decision to relocate to New York influenced by budgetary factors and the state’s appealing tax incentives for productions.

This marks a first for the Taylor Sheridan universe, as ‘Tulsa King’ becomes the inaugural Sheridan show to film a season in New York or Los Angeles, a notable shift for a creator known for heartland narratives.

The series has experienced location changes before, with the first season primarily filmed in Oklahoma City and season 2 moving to Atlanta after feedback from the cast and crew.

There are also changes in the cast. Stallone’s daughter, Scarlet Rose Stallone, who has portrayed Spencer since the series began, has been elevated to a series regular, according to CBR. Additionally, TVLine reports that four new series regulars will join: Erik Palladino from ‘ER,’ Glenn Fleshler from ‘Billions,’ Nickola Shreli from ‘Power Book IV: Force,’ and Anthony Skordi from ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime.’

Stallone has recently signed a new deal, similar to his agreements for seasons 3 and 4, which contributed to the series’ renewal. Terence Winter, who served as the showrunner for the first season, is returning as head writer and executive producer for season 4, as reported by TheWrap.

The fourth season is set to premiere on October 16 on Paramount+, featuring a cast that includes Martin Starr, Jay Will, Vincent Piazza, Annabella Sciorra, Frank Grillo, Neal McDonough, Garrett Hedlund, and Dana Delany, with Gretchen Mol joining as a series regular, according to Mandatory.

The broader franchise is also expanding, with a spinoff featuring Samuel L. Jackson titled ‘Frisco King’ currently in production. This makes ‘Tulsa King’ only the second Sheridan series for Paramount+, alongside ‘Yellowstone,’ to branch out into a franchise.

The renewal’s synopsis suggests an intriguing direction for the story. Each move pulls Dwight deeper into the street instincts he left behind in New York, transforming Tulsa into a battleground and Dwight into a formidable threat, as noted by Deadline.

After years of building an empire away from home, the General is returning to the city that shaped him. Old grudges, former allies, and a host of unfinished business are likely waiting for him.
