U.S. Distribution Secured for ‘Sanctuary’ Featuring ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Nina Kiri
International genre films often struggle to gain traction in the U.S. market unless they have a notable festival win or a well-known name attached. However, Serbia’s burgeoning film industry is making waves with its latest offering.
The film, titled ‘Sanctuary,’ is an English-language, post-apocalyptic thriller that has recently secured U.S. distribution through Vertical. This deal marks a significant achievement for a production primarily supported by Serbian talent and financing while targeting American audiences.
Set in a devastated version of Earth, the narrative follows a desperate village that descends into chaos upon discovering a cryogenically frozen woman among the ruins. Her arrival propels a young warrior and the enigmatic woman on a quest toward a lost city, seeking answers that could be crucial for humanity’s survival.
Filip Kovačević, who directed the 2016 action thriller ‘Incarnation,’ is at the helm of this project. He described ‘Sanctuary’ to Variety as an effort to provide “a fresh take on dystopian sci-fi, with an original story set in a distinct ‘semi-far future.’”
“The time is near enough so the events that led to the collapse of civilization are still relevant, but far enough that they have been shrouded in mystery and myth,” Kovačević explained. “The intent was to create an entertaining genre film that examines the cyclical nature of history and the individual’s role within it.”
Nina Kiri, recognized by American audiences for her role as Alma in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ leads the cast. She is joined by Dutch actor Jonas Smulders, known for ‘Luka’ and ‘Paradise Drifters,’ along with Serbian star Darko Perić, who gained international fame from ‘Money Heist.’
The production of ‘Sanctuary’ involved Đorđe Stanković, Kovačević, and Vukota Antunović through Belgrade-based Void Pictures in collaboration with TS Media, the production division of telecommunications giant Telekom Srbija. Antunović emphasized that the project was built on collaboration, merging an international and domestic cast with a Serbian crew to create something authentically rooted in its setting while appealing to a broader audience.
This ambition aligns with a larger strategy emerging within Serbia’s film industry. Aleksandra Martinović, Telekom Srbija’s chief multimedia and content officer, highlighted ‘Sanctuary’ as the company’s most significant gamble to date, describing it as a substantial creative and financial risk as Serbia aims to establish itself as a production hub in the Balkan region.
World sales for the film are being managed by Sublimity, which has already secured several international deals in addition to the newly announced U.S. acquisition. With distribution confirmed in one of the industry’s most competitive markets, ‘Sanctuary’ is set to explore whether Serbian-led genre filmmaking can resonate with American streaming and theatrical audiences, similar to other international productions in recent years.
For Kiri, this project adds another genre credit to her diverse career, which already includes horror and prestige drama. For the Serbian production team, securing a U.S. distribution deal represents the international validation they have been pursuing. The film’s success will ultimately depend on its reception once it reaches American audiences.
With the deal just announced and no release date confirmed yet, fans of post-apocalyptic sci-fi and ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ alum Nina Kiri have a new title to watch for.
