‘Urban Legend’ Reboot in the Works with Horror Veteran Gary Dauberman
A new version of the 1998 horror movie Urban Legend is in the works. The movie is being made by Screen Gems, a part of Sony. The new film will be a reboot — a fresh take on the original story. Right now, it’s still early in development.
Gary Dauberman, known for scary movies like It, Annabelle, and The Nun, will help make the movie through his company, Coin Operated. He is also a producer on the upcoming film Until Dawn, which is based on a video game. That movie comes out this Friday.
Neal Moritz, who produced the first Urban Legend movie back in 1998, is also in talks to return as a producer for this new version. The new Urban Legend script will be written by Shanrah Wakefield.
The first Urban Legend movie came out in 1998. It was about a group of college students at a New England university being hunted by a killer. The killer’s methods were based on well-known urban legends, like dying from eating Pop Rocks with soda or being chased by a gang after flashing headlights.
The original film starred young stars of the ’90s, including Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, Alicia Witt, Tara Reid, and Michael Rosenbaum. It was popular at the time and made good money, though it wasn’t as big as other scary movies like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer. Two sequels followed the original.
The new reboot will focus on what urban legends are like in today’s digital world. We don’t know the exact plot yet, but it’s expected to explore how scary stories spread in the age of the internet and social media.
