Warner Bros. CEO Discusses ‘Superman’ Sequel After ‘Supergirl’ Box Office Failure
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is optimistic that the next Superman film could steer the franchise back on track, despite the lackluster box office results of ‘Supergirl’ earlier this year.
During the latest earnings call with Wall Street analysts, Zaslav was questioned about potential changes to the studio’s DC strategy following ‘Supergirl’s’ disappointing performance. He confirmed that there would be no changes, emphasizing that DC Studios co-head James Gunn remains dedicated to the upcoming Superman sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow’, which is reportedly making impressive progress behind the scenes.
Zaslav expressed his confidence in Gunn’s efforts, stating, “I saw some pictures yesterday that looked amazing. Actually, yesterday was James’s birthday, and he’s out working. He’s working 16, 18 hours a day. It looks fantastic. We’re super excited about it.”
These remarks follow ‘Supergirl’s’ struggle at the box office, where it earned approximately $126 million worldwide. This disappointing outcome contributed to Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter challenges, especially when compared to the previous year’s stronger theatrical performance.
Despite this setback, Zaslav made it clear that Warner Bros. Discovery is not retreating from its current DC plans. Since taking over DC Studios in 2022, Gunn and Peter Safran have been focused on revitalizing the franchise and establishing a more interconnected future for DC films and television.

The new DC era kicked off with 2025’s ‘Superman’, which was a pivotal release for the studio and helped lay the groundwork for Gunn’s vision. Zaslav also highlighted other successful projects, including ‘The Penguin’, as evidence that the company’s new strategy is effective.
“We have a robust pipeline, and Peter and James are hard at work,” Zaslav remarked during the call.
In addition to ‘Man of Tomorrow’, DC has several significant projects in the works, such as ‘Clayface’, ‘Lanterns’, and the eagerly awaited sequel to Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’. Zaslav noted that he recently spoke with Reeves and commended the director for his ongoing dedication to the next installment of the franchise.
Zaslav also addressed Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader movie plans, indicating that the studio anticipates releasing more films in the upcoming years. While the company plans to launch 14 movies in 2026, that number is expected to rise to 19 in 2027.
He expressed confidence in the upcoming lineup, attributing it to the studio’s major franchises and creative collaborations. Zaslav stated that Warner Bros. Discovery has “the unique benefit of a great creative team, great relationships in the creative communities, and an enormous amount of IP.”
Looking ahead, the studio is gearing up for a significant slate that includes ‘Man of Tomorrow’, the ‘Batman’ sequel, a new ‘Lord of the Rings’ film, and ‘Minecraft 2’. Zaslav acknowledged that 2026 might feature fewer major blockbuster releases compared to the following year, but emphasized that the company is focused on releasing films when they are ready rather than rushing projects to meet deadlines.
For now, Warner Bros. Discovery seems committed to maintaining its course with Gunn’s DC Universe. While ‘Supergirl’ may have faltered, the studio is hopeful that Superman’s next chapter will demonstrate that the franchise is on the right path.
