Game show announcers typically stay out of the limelight, focusing on delivering prizes and puzzle reveals while the hosts take center stage. This is what made Jim Thornton a familiar voice on ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ a presence fans have enjoyed night after night, long before Ryan Seacrest took over hosting duties.

Thornton has been the announcer since 2011, later extending his role to include ‘Celebrity Wheel of Fortune’ when it premiered in 2021. He has also been a well-known figure in Los Angeles media for decades, having worked as an afternoon anchor and previously as a traffic reporter since 1985.

However, his steady tenure has come to an unexpected halt. Sony Pictures Television has suspended ‘Wheel of Fortune’ announcer Jim Thornton and is recasting his role following an alleged incident involving him on a commercial flight back in May.

Details about the incident are sparse, but according to TMZ, which broke the story, a passenger expressed concerns to a flight attendant about Thornton during an American Airlines flight. TMZ further reported that the situation escalated to the point where the pilot arranged for law enforcement to meet Thornton upon landing.

American Airlines confirmed to Deadline that its Flight 1276 was indeed met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14, although the airline did not specifically name Thornton in its statement. TMZ also reported that officers questioned Thornton, who was wearing a ‘Wheel of Fortune’-branded jacket at the time, before he was released without further incident.

Sony Pictures Television acknowledged the suspension in a statement, noting that the studio recently became aware of allegations concerning Thornton and that he has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ while a thorough investigation is conducted. According to Deadline, the recasting is currently understood to be temporary as the investigation continues.

This suspension represents an unexpected disruption for a broadcaster who has been a steady and largely uncontroversial presence on one of television’s longest-running game shows. Thornton has always operated somewhat behind the scenes compared to the show’s hosts, first alongside Pat Sajak and Vanna White, and more recently with Seacrest, who took over hosting duties after Sajak’s retirement.

Neither Sony Pictures Television nor Thornton has provided additional details regarding the specific nature of the allegations under investigation. As the studio works through this process, questions remain about whether Thornton’s suspension will be temporary or lead to a more permanent exit from the franchise he has been part of for over a decade.

For now, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ will continue its production with a recast announcer filling in for Thornton while Sony completes its review. Fans tuning in over the next few weeks will hear a different voice announcing prizes, at least until the investigation into the events of that May flight concludes.
