British television has seen a significant resurgence in prestige crime drama, with Paramount+ stepping into the spotlight through a stylish saga crafted by Ronan Bennett and Guy Ritchie. The series ‘MobLand’ immerses viewers in the brutal turf wars of the Harrigan family as they battle rival syndicates across London. Central to this conflict is Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza, a weary fixer tasked with managing the aftermath of reckless decisions made by the bosses.

Upon its release, the show garnered considerable attention, quickly attracting an audience eager for high-stakes underworld drama. Industry reports highlighted the program’s impressive reach after Variety reported that Paramount+ renewed ‘MobLand’ for a second season following a debut that drew in 26 million viewers. As the new season progresses, internal family power struggles escalate, prompting matriarch Maeve Harrigan to devise secretive schemes that extend beyond English borders.

The enigmatic figure known as Medusa officially emerges during the fifth episode of season two, titled “Birdland.” In this episode, Maeve sends her impulsive grandson Eddie and his partner Gina to Kenmare, Ireland, under the pretense of a relaxing getaway. Upon their arrival, Eddie finds a gift basket containing a loaded handgun along with a chilling order from Maeve: eliminate a mysterious target and return with Medusa’s head.

Medusa is a formidable Irish criminal portrayed by veteran actor Colm Meaney, who is well-known to genre fans as Chief Miles O’Brien in ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.’ For those familiar with Meaney’s typically warm roles, this guest appearance marks a striking and unsettling shift. Set against the backdrop of County Kerry, Meaney’s real-life hometown, the character exudes a quiet menace that commands attention in every scene.

While the name Medusa evokes ancient mythology, the street name stems from a grim reality. The Kerry crime boss primarily operates within the commercial concrete industry in the region. Anyone who dares to cross him finds themselves entombed in wet cement, effectively turning enemies into permanent stone monuments beneath construction sites.

Viewers first encounter the gangster inside McMullan’s pub in Kenmare, flanked by loyal enforcers as he recounts gruesome tales of his brutality to the locals. He exhibits a complete lack of remorse, boasting about eliminating competitors without hesitation. His chilling presence immediately establishes that Maeve’s assassination order is far from a routine task; it’s a potential death trap for the unsuspecting Harrigan heir.

Young Eddie Harrigan, tasked with taking out this entrenched kingpin, quickly reveals himself to be outmatched. Lacking basic criminal skills, the naive youth resorts to online tutorials to learn how to handle a firearm before following the boss home. When Eddie sneaks into Medusa’s residence to carry out the hit, the seasoned crime lord effortlessly ambushes him and throws him down the stairs.

Bound tightly to a chair, Eddie crumbles under interrogation and reveals that Maeve sent him. Unfazed by the Harrigan name, Medusa responds with brutal cruelty, heating a fire poker in the hearth with the intent to torture his captive. This agonizing scene underscores the depths of Medusa’s depravity, confirming that this isolated underworld figure operates by his own ruthless rules.

Eddie’s life is spared only when Gina intervenes from outside, banging on the glass window to create a distraction. As Medusa’s armed henchmen move to seize her, Harry Da Souza arrives in a helicopter for a desperate rescue. With precision, Harry fires a series of headshots, killing Medusa and his men instantly before evacuating the young couple.

This harrowing Irish detour highlights the moral decay within the Harrigan dynasty and Maeve’s ruthless leadership. Creator Ronan Bennett has noted that real-life syndicates inspired the series, stating, “These families are fathers, sons, mothers, sisters, cousins, and the rest,” speaking to Creative Screenwriting. He added that “those women do have enormous respect within the family, and their voice counts a lot,” a leverage Maeve wields with calculated malice.

Even though Medusa meets a violent end, his brief presence triggers catastrophic consequences for the entire Harrigan syndicate. Harry’s diversion to Ireland leaves the family’s estate in the Cotswolds vulnerable to a devastating ambush orchestrated by rival Frankie Cooper. By using Medusa as a pawn in her personal agenda, Maeve sets off a chain reaction of bloodshed that threatens to bring the Harrigan empire to its knees.

Let us know in the comments below whether you think Maeve intentionally sent Eddie to his demise at the hands of Medusa or genuinely believed he would succeed.
