Dippold emphasized that her primary aim with the series is to keep viewers eager for more from the world she has crafted. She remarked, “the audience just wants to lean in more and more.” The concept for the show originated from her desire to create a place that feels authentic, despite being filled with bizarre and dangerous occurrences.
She portrayed the fictional island of Widow’s Bay as a location that seems like it could genuinely exist. She added, “I always wanted this place to feel like a real world that I could take a ferry to and get lost in and explore all the little terrifying nooks and crannies. I would be dead after a week, but that’s the dream.” Her remarks highlight the significance of the setting to the overall atmosphere of the series.
Matthew Rhys, who portrays Mayor Tom Loftis, also shared his thoughts on what sets the show apart. He commended the writing and world-building, stating, “When I first read the [pilot] script, it was almost a disservice to call it a horror-comedy. What Katie and the writers and the entire crew have done is they’ve built a place with a history and characters you cannot get anywhere else on television. There is a deep bench of stories to be told about this town, about these people.”
His comments indicate that there remains a wealth of potential storylines within the universe of Widow’s Bay, even beyond the current season. The notion of a “deep bench” of stories has fueled fan hopes for the show’s continuation.
