Will ‘Euphoria’ Return for Season 4? Latest Updates and Insights
Few shows have captivated audiences quite like ‘Euphoria,’ HBO’s dazzling yet heartbreaking portrayal of young people navigating their tumultuous lives. After a four-year hiatus since Season 2, the series made its comeback in April with a time-jumped third season that matured its characters beyond high school and into a more complex reality. The season debuted to an impressive 8.5 million viewers within its first three days, marking a 44 percent increase compared to the Season 2 premiere.
The journey to Season 3 was fraught with challenges, including delays stemming from creator Sam Levinson’s other projects and the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in late 2023, which pushed timelines even further. Levinson also reportedly pitched ideas to HBO, such as a private investigator storyline for Rue, but the network chose to maintain continuity with the previous seasons instead.
With the finale now aired, fans are left pondering a seemingly straightforward question: is this truly the end? The Season 3 finale, titled “In God We Trust,” featured a 93-minute extended episode that could signify a conclusion to the HBO drama. However, HBO has officially labeled it a “season finale” rather than a “series finale,” leaving the show’s future uncertain. Levinson mentioned to Variety in April that he approaches each season as if it might be the last and currently has “no plans” for a potential Season 4.
Zendaya has been somewhat more candid. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Emmy-winning actress responded affirmatively when asked if Season 3 would be the series’ final chapter, stating that “closure is coming.” In the same interview, Zendaya expressed her pride in her work on ‘Euphoria,’ sharing that the show “cracked my heart open” and that Rue has taught her “so much about life.” Such sentiments suggest she may not be anticipating a return to the set anytime soon.
Beyond the creative aspects, the possibility of a fourth season hinges on viewership, audience reception, and demand, all of which will be assessed now that the current season has concluded. Even if a renewal occurs, the wait for the next season could be lengthy, given that Season 3 arrived nearly four years after Season 2. The future of the show is further complicated by the busy schedules of its talented cast, many of whom have become major stars since the series first aired.
This season also unfolded against the backdrop of real loss, as it was the first without Angus Cloud, who portrayed the beloved character Fez and passed away in July 2023. Additionally, Eric Dane appeared in one of his final performances following his death earlier this year. These absences have lent the season a poignant weight that complicates the question of whether ‘Euphoria’ should continue.
As of now, HBO has not confirmed whether there will be another season, and some of Levinson’s ambiguous comments have led to speculation about whether “no plans” truly means never. For the time being, Rue Bennett’s fate—and the show’s future—remains uncertain, with only a few individuals privy to the real answers.
What do you think? Should ‘Euphoria’ conclude with Season 3, allowing Rue’s story to end on its own terms, or do you believe the series still has more to explore?
