Fans have long anticipated a crossover between ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ ever since both series were announced. Although these two spinoffs have coexisted for some time, the crossover remains unrealized, despite the growing belief that it’s only a matter of time. The connection seems logical, especially since the remaining Duttons are divided between the two distinct shows.

Currently, the two series are only connected through their origins as sequels to ‘Yellowstone’. However, this may soon change, as both shows concluded their first seasons with notably similar cliffhangers. Here’s an overview of the connection between ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ and what might bring them together.

‘Marshals’ continues the story of Kayce Dutton, portrayed by Luke Grimes, following his choice to sell the family’s Montana ranch in the ‘Yellowstone’ finale. He reverts to his military roots by joining a team of U.S. Marshals tasked with solving local cases. This procedural series airs on CBS.

In contrast, ‘Dutton Ranch’ takes a different approach. It centers on Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler as they move to the small Southern Texas town of Rio Paloma. This series resembles a more traditional serialized drama akin to ‘Yellowstone’.

The two shows do share some connections. Beth and Rip have been referenced in ‘Marshals’, and John Dutton has been mentioned in several episodes. However, Beth and Rip have not discussed Kayce since their Montana home was destroyed.

The most compelling link between the two series may stem from coincidental timing. Both first seasons concluded with the kidnapping of a main character’s son, and both boys may now be in Texas. This has led fans to speculate about potential connections.

‘Marshals’ wrapped up on May 24 with Tate being abducted by the new antagonist Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey. Meanwhile, ‘Dutton Ranch’ concluded on July 3 with Carter, portrayed by Finn Little, being kidnapped by the cartel. Tom claimed he was heading to Texas, though this could have been a deception.

In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Reilly and Hauser were asked if the similar endings were intentional. Reilly smiled and teased “Maybe,” leaving it ambiguous. While it’s not a confirmation, it certainly isn’t a denial either.

The emotional case for a crossover is compelling. Grimes has mentioned that he and Reilly still discuss the idea, deeming it essential for both characters. Aside from Tate, they represent the last of the Dutton lineage and need to support one another.

Reilly has also expressed her desire for a crossover. She told People that she hopes to collaborate with Grimes again, stating, “I wish we had a crossover.” Grimes has hinted that there’s a strong possibility fans will see more ‘Yellowstone’ stars on ‘Marshals’.

There are unresolved issues as well. Reilly and Hauser mentioned that not addressing Monica’s death in ‘Dutton Ranch’ was a missed opportunity they hope to rectify in the next season. A reunion would allow Beth to confront that loss alongside the brother who experienced it.

So, what’s preventing a crossover in Season 2? According to the showrunner, the primary obstacle is logistics. ‘Marshals’ adheres to a traditional broadcast schedule, while ‘Dutton Ranch’ is a streaming series that releases seasons as scheduling permits.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut appears to have crafted the ‘Marshals’ finale to hint at a trip to Texas, but the second season may not feature the crossover due to these scheduling challenges. This is disappointing for fans eager to see Kayce and Beth share the screen. However, it suggests that the idea remains alive rather than completely abandoned.

As a consolation, Jefferson White is confirmed to appear in ‘Marshals’ as Jimmy, the former ranch hand who moved to Texas to work on the Four Sixes. The second season of ‘Marshals’ is set to premiere on CBS in fall 2026, while ‘Dutton Ranch’ has yet to announce a second season date.

Not everyone believes the crossover would be successful. One critic argued that ‘Marshals’ lacks quality, while ‘Dutton Ranch’ feels more aligned with the essence of Taylor Sheridan’s original series. If Beth and Kayce do end up pursuing Tate and Carter across Texas together, would you prefer to see her bring Rip along or let the Dutton siblings handle it solo?
