‘X-Men ’97‘ has spent its second season building towards a critical question: what occurs when Apocalypse’s consciousness takes hold of a beloved team member? This dilemma has loomed large since Gambit’s shocking return, with Remy LeBeau’s body becoming the battleground for a conflict far greater than any single mutant.

As the finale approached, several plot threads remained unresolved. X-Force and X-Factor, led by Cable and Val Cooper, believed Gambit was still a danger even after Professor X and Rogue managed to pull his consciousness from Apocalypse’s control, setting the stage for a confrontation with the X-Men.

This clash culminates in episode 9, titled ‘Survival of the Fittest,’ which wraps up Season 2 with the X-Men making their stand against X-Force and X-Factor at X-Corp headquarters. The rival teams storm the building, supported by a SHIELD helicarrier and a legion of Sentinel Squad ONE fighters, igniting a chaotic, mutant-on-mutant battle.

While the fight unfolds, a parallel story takes shape. Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler investigate Apocalypse’s Ship and stumble upon the Celestial Shrine, the same site that transformed En Sabah Nur into Apocalypse centuries ago. Rogue bravely decides to enter it, confronting the Celestial being Eson the Searcher.

Eson, impressed by Rogue’s determination to fight for Gambit, grants her immense Celestial power, but only if she is willing to sacrifice herself once the threat is neutralized. This heavy price sets the stage for the episode’s emotional climax.

The battle escalates when Cable confronts Gambit and shoots him, a moment that shocks the rest of the team. Instead of eliminating the threat, Gambit’s death only empowers Apocalypse to fully take control of his body, resulting in a formidable hybrid that fans have dubbed “Gampocalypse.”

Rogue, now in her new Celestial form, faces him, and the confrontation concludes almost immediately as she extracts Apocalypse’s essence from Gambit’s body, trapping it within a gem she hands to Cable. While this resolution is decisive, critics have noted that it wraps up the season’s primary threat in mere seconds after weeks of buildup.

The finale reserves its most heartbreaking twist for last. Because Rogue owes a debt to Eson for the power she borrowed, Nightcrawler steps in to take her place, sacrificing himself to save his sister and the rest of the team. The episode concludes with a montage showing the X-Men leading happier lives due to Kurt’s sacrifice, alongside a strong hint that Val Cooper has been shot by Mystique, likely setting up a Season 3 storyline involving her son, Graydon Creed, who has ascended to the presidency.

For fans grieving Nightcrawler, there’s good news: ‘X-Men ’97’ has already been renewed for a third season, with a fourth reportedly in the works, allowing the creative team to delve into the aftermath of Kurt’s death and Val Cooper’s apparent shooting in future episodes.

Reactions to the finale have been mixed. Some critics praised the episode’s animation and character-driven action sequences, while others argued that the swift resolution of the Apocalypse threat undermines the stakes built throughout the season, especially when compared to Magneto’s death and Gambit’s transformation into a Horseman earlier in the series.

Despite any lingering criticisms, Season 2 leaves ‘X-Men ’97’ with ample narrative potential heading into its next chapter, from a grieving team to an uncertain political landscape under President Graydon Creed.
