Zach Woods Defends Mark Ruffalo Amid Antisemitism Allegations
Zach Woods is humorously coming to Mark Ruffalo’s defense after the Marvel star faced accusations of antisemitism.
The ‘The Office’ actor shared a video on Instagram where he pretended to explain how he personally discovered that Ruffalo was allegedly antisemitic. The story was clearly satirical, with Woods using a series of absurd movie pitches to illustrate that the accusations against Ruffalo should not be taken seriously.
Woods began by stating, “Mark Ruffalo is actually antisemitic and I know this from personal experience.” He then claimed he once met with Ruffalo to pitch a concept called “Orthodox Hulk.”
In Woods’ fictional narrative, the film would feature Ruffalo’s Hulk as an Orthodox Jewish character who refrains from working on Saturdays and has a brother who is a cardiologist.
Woods continued the joke by claiming he pitched Ruffalo another idea involving a Jewish version of Black Panther, followed by an “Iron Man” story about a Jewish character who works as an ironer and hails from the Lower East Side.
The joke culminated with Woods pretending that Ruffalo rejected all three ideas due to his supposed antisemitism. Woods then completely undermined the accusation by praising Ruffalo.
“And so, sure Mark Ruffalo advocates tirelessly on behalf of the disenfranchised and the defenseless. Sure, he always stands up for the underdog and is a paragon of decency in a dark world,” Woods remarked.
He added, “But, I gave him three golden ideas and the only reason he would have said no to them is his antisemitism. So, I rest my case.”
The video served as Woods’ tongue-in-cheek response to the controversy surrounding Ruffalo. The outlet also mentioned that it reached out to representatives for both actors but did not receive an immediate response.
The controversy ignited after Ruffalo criticized Oracle for its reported ties to the Israeli military. According to Variety, Ruffalo condemned Oracle executive vice chair Safra Catz over technology supplied to the Israeli government and described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and part of an apartheid system.
Paramount later accused Ruffalo of employing antisemitic tropes. In a statement reported by Variety on August 21, the company expressed concern over what it termed antisemitic language being used during what it perceived as a business dispute.
Ruffalo vehemently denied that accusation the following day. In a statement shared on social media, he stated, “The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”
He also contended that criticizing Israeli government actions, a military technology contract, or business executives does not equate to attacking Jewish individuals.
Ruffalo emphasized that his views stem from his own political beliefs and expressed his “deep love and respect” for Jewish people. He highlighted Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have significantly influenced his life.
Woods’ video does not seem to be a serious attempt to engage in the political debate itself. Instead, the actor utilized humor to show his support for Ruffalo while ridiculing the notion that the Marvel star’s comments inherently indicate prejudice against Jewish people.
This exchange occurs as Ruffalo continues to face backlash over his comments, while supporters argue that his statements were aimed at governments, corporations, and political actions rather than Jewish individuals as a collective.
