Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, has been formally charged with the double homicide of his parents. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the filing of two counts of first-degree murder against him on Tuesday.

If convicted, Nick faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. Prosecutors stated that the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders makes him eligible for capital punishment, though a final decision on seeking the death penalty has not yet been made.

The bodies of Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were discovered in their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon. Their daughter, Romy, found her parents and immediately contacted authorities. Reports confirm that both victims died from multiple stab wounds.

Following the discovery of the bodies, police quickly identified Nick as the suspect. He was arrested on Monday in Exposition Park, near the University of Southern California. Before his capture, he had reportedly checked into a hotel in Santa Monica, where staff later discovered a shower covered in blood.

Witnesses reported seeing a heated altercation between Nick and his father the night before the tragedy. The argument occurred at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien, which the family had attended together just hours before the killings took place.

Nick Reiner has a known history of substance abuse issues, which were previously explored in the 2015 semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” directed by his father. He is currently being held without bail and did not appear in court on Tuesday as he awaited medical clearance.
