Joe Russo Discusses Importance of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Re-Release in Theaters
Director Joe Russo has shared exciting insights regarding the upcoming re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ revealing that it will feature new material that directly connects to the next major Marvel film, ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
This announcement follows Disney’s confirmation of plans to bring the 2019 blockbuster back to theaters with additional footage. Russo, who co-directed the film alongside his brother Anthony Russo, clarified that this isn’t merely extra content or deleted scenes.
Instead, the new material is intricately linked to the narrative of ‘Doomsday,’ the next significant installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He emphasized that the intention is to forge a stronger connection between the two films ahead of the upcoming release.
Joe Russo characterized the re-release as more than just a simple return to cinemas. He stated, “It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame.”
He elaborated that the new content aims to help set the stage for what lies ahead in the MCU, referring to it as a bridge between the two narratives. According to him, the added footage is designed to guide audiences from the events of ‘Endgame’ into the forthcoming ‘Doomsday’ film.
Russo noted that the re-release presents a unique opportunity to expand the story of characters introduced in earlier Marvel films. He added that it also continues their journey in a manner that connects directly to the next chapter.
He noted, “It’s a critical companion story that is setup for what you’re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers: Doomsday.”
He also explained that the decision to re-release ‘Endgame’ was logical given the film’s immense success, noting that major releases like this are not always feasible due to costs and planning.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ originally premiered in 2019 and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, amassing nearly $2.8 billion globally. It wrapped up the storyline involving Thanos and the Infinity Stones, marking the conclusion of the MCU’s Infinity Saga era.
Since then, Marvel has broadened its universe with numerous new films and streaming series, introducing fresh characters and storylines across various timelines.
The re-release is anticipated to hit theaters in September, while ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set for release on December 18.
This initiative demonstrates how Marvel is striving to closely connect its earlier films with future storylines rather than treating them as isolated chapters. It could enhance the significance of ‘Endgame,’ but it also risks perplexing casual viewers who prefer the original narrative.
