Planned DCU Film ‘The Authority’ Faces Major Change, James Gunn Confirms
A planned film in the new DC Universe is no longer progressing as fans had anticipated. Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn provided an update regarding ‘The Authority’, a project that was announced earlier in the studio’s new lineup.
The movie was intended to spotlight a team of powerful characters known for their extreme methods in addressing global issues. Originating from Wildstorm comics, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, this group was introduced as one of the more distinctive concepts for the DCU. However, after several years of minimal advancement, Gunn has now clarified the reasons behind the project’s slowdown.
Addressing fans directly online, Gunn dispelled rumors concerning his involvement and the film’s current status. He stated, “Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing ‘The Authority’. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe someday. Not soon.”

This statement confirms that the movie is not currently advancing, though it has not been entirely canceled. Gunn had previously described ‘The Authority’ as one of the most challenging DC projects to develop, and it now appears those difficulties have further delayed it.
The update followed fans’ inquiries about the film on social media, where speculation about its future had been rampant. Gunn’s response made it clear that the project requires more time and a better fit within the broader DCU before it can proceed.
Simultaneously, Gunn shared positive news about other projects. He confirmed that ‘Booster Gold’ is still in development and remarked, “[Booster Gold] is in development. [Paradise Lost] is in extreme development.” This indicates that while some plans are shifting, other elements of the DCU remain active.
For now, the focus seems to be on gradually building the universe. Upcoming projects like ‘Supergirl’, scheduled for release in June 2026, and ‘Clayface’ later that year are expected to help shape the world before more intricate team stories are introduced.
This delay could ultimately benefit the DCU in the long term. Establishing strong foundations with well-known characters before introducing a less familiar team like ‘The Authority’ may create a more cohesive and comprehensible narrative.
