Fifteen years after ‘Thor’ first premiered, director Kenneth Branagh reflects on the film and shares intriguing insights about the character’s potential future. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Branagh discussed his experience working on the Marvel movie and revealed that he once envisioned a very different narrative for a sequel.

The original film, which introduced Thor to audiences, was a significant success and played a crucial role in expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Earth. Featuring Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the film was overseen by Kevin Feige, with Branagh instrumental in establishing the movie’s tone by blending mythology with serious character drama.

Years later, Branagh admits he would have taken Thor’s journey in a much darker direction had he returned. Rather than the humorous approach seen in subsequent films, he envisioned a concluding chapter akin to ‘Logan.’

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant ‘Logan.’ I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

Branagh’s concept would emphasize emotion and closure, providing the character with a fitting conclusion after years of adventures. He expressed admiration for the franchise’s evolution, even as it diverged from his original vision.

“It could be a beautiful thing. I would love to see it, for sure.”

Branagh also explained why he chose not to return after the first film, noting that the process of creating a Marvel movie is quite demanding and he needed a break at that time. Although the studio expressed interest in having him back, he felt he lacked the energy to continue immediately.

Currently, the ‘Thor’ films are recognized for their blend of action and comedy, particularly in later installments. However, Branagh’s remarks indicate that a different path was once on the table—one that would have embraced serious storytelling and a powerful conclusion for the character.

A darker, more emotional final Thor film could resonate well with audiences. Given the character’s long history, providing him with a strong ending similar to what ‘Logan’ achieved for Wolverine would feel refreshing. Yet, Marvel has built its success on lighter tones in recent years, making this a significant shift. What are your thoughts? Would you be interested in a serious, final Thor story like this?
