The upcoming HBO series ‘Lanterns’ is encountering early fan debate, prompting the show’s creative team to tackle the criticism directly.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, showrunner Chris Mundy discussed the audience’s response to the first trailer and the concerns raised by some viewers. Mundy, recognized for his work on ‘Ozark,’ was asked about the challenge of crafting a DC story that aligns with HBO’s more grounded drama style.

He described the process as more enjoyable than challenging. “It was less challenging than it was just exciting. Our take was that we have this incredibly rich mythology within the Green Lantern canon, and we have this incredibly rich history of Sunday night HBO shows—everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones and in between.”

Mundy emphasized that the aim was to prioritize the characters as individuals while honoring the source material from the comics. “The fun of it was to try to create a real, layered drama that dealt with who these characters are as human beings while still staying true to the spirit of what makes the comics so special,” he stated.

He also added that the show is crafted to appeal to both new viewers and longtime fans. According to Mundy, the writers aimed to make it accessible for those unfamiliar with the comics while ensuring it is detailed enough for fans who understand the deeper lore. “So, yes, it was challenging, but only in the way that the most fun things are,” he remarked.

This discussion follows early reactions to the trailer that sparked criticism online. Some fans have expressed concerns about the show’s direction, suggesting it feels more grounded than anticipated and does not delve deeply into the more cosmic aspects of the Green Lantern mythology. Others have also debated the show’s title and its emphasis on earth-based storytelling.

Nonetheless, the series is expected to incorporate key elements from the comics. The narrative revolves around two intergalactic officers who become embroiled in a murder investigation on Earth. The show is also anticipated to introduce familiar characters from the Green Lantern universe, including Sinestro, a significant figure associated with the Yellow Lantern Corps in the comics.

There are also indications that the series could expand further in future seasons, potentially exploring other facets of the Lantern mythology if the show continues.

The broader DC Universe has already begun introducing Green Lantern characters in other projects, including Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Guy Gardner, who appeared in the 2025 ‘Superman’ film and is expected to return in ‘Lanterns.’

As of now, HBO has confirmed that ‘Lanterns’ is set to premiere on August 16.

Early backlash is quite common with major comic adaptations, especially when the tone diverges from fan expectations. What Mundy is describing seems to blend crime drama with superhero storytelling, which could resonate if the writing is strong. It will be intriguing to see if viewers embrace it once more footage is revealed. What are your thoughts on this direction for a Green Lantern show? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments.
