Big stories from Hollywood often emerge from unexpected places, particularly when they involve famous figures and intriguing “what could have been” scenarios.

Over the years, fans have encountered numerous surprising ideas about actors, musicians, and major studios intersecting in ways that never fully materialized. One such tale connects a global music icon with one of the largest comic book companies in the world.

In the 1990s, when ‘Marvel’ was not the powerhouse it is today, the company faced significant challenges. Struggling financially, Marvel filed for bankruptcy in 1996 before merging with ToyBiz in 1998. Long before its $4 billion acquisition by Disney in 2009, Marvel was still searching for stability.

According to Taj Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, the King of Pop had serious intentions regarding the company. In an interview with Popcorned Planet, Taj revealed that his uncle was in discussions to purchase Marvel alongside Stan Lee. “He wanted to [buy Marvel] with Stan Lee, and they had been talking and discussing that. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. They were shut down from doing that,” he stated. “I don’t know the reasons why, but they were adamantly in the process of doing that.”

This notion extended beyond mere business. Michael Jackson was known to be an avid fan of comic book characters. Taj explained that his uncle had a deep appreciation for Marvel stories and was familiar with many of the characters. “Besides Spider-Man, he was a huge Marvel fan. He knew all the characters. So it was not only Spider-Man [he wanted to buy]. But yeah, he probably wanted to be Spider-Man [laughs].”

Stan Lee himself had also addressed this in the past. At San Diego Comic-Con in 2009, he recounted his conversations with Michael Jackson. Later, in comments reported by The Telegraph, Lee stated, “I’m not sure whether he just wanted to produce it or wanted to play the role. Our conversation never got that far along.”

He also mentioned that Jackson believed Lee could assist him in securing the rights, but that was not feasible. “He thought I’d be the one who could get him the rights [to Spider-Man], and I told him I couldn’t,” Lee explained. “He would have to go to the Marvel company. But we did become friendly, and he was a great guy.”

Lee reiterated the story in a 2012 interview with Moviefone. “Yes, he wanted to. He felt that would be the only way that he could play Spider-Man,” he confirmed. When asked how things might have turned out, Lee simply stated: “I can’t imagine it would have been totally different of course, but maybe not as successful. Michael was not a great businessman.”

Ultimately, ‘Spider-Man’ made its way to the big screen in 2002, directed by Sam Raimi and featuring Tobey Maguire. The character would later be rebooted within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting in 2016 with Tom Holland taking on the role.

Taj Jackson also shared his thoughts on how his uncle would react to today’s Marvel films. “He would be so excited about it,” he said. “He was such a movie buff in that way that I think he would have thought this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, all these characters coming together.”

Reflecting on the idea of Michael Jackson being closely associated with Marvel feels unusual, yet it highlights how different the landscape could have been. This story continues to intrigue fans and ignite curiosity about an alternate Hollywood that never came to fruition.
