George Lucas Announces New Star Wars Exhibition at Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
A new museum project in Los Angeles is taking shape and is already attracting attention from film enthusiasts and art aficionados. Large cultural spaces like this often blend various storytelling forms, from painting and photography to modern cinema, illustrating how creative work evolves over time. This approach aims to connect traditional art forms with contemporary ones within a shared environment.
According to an official announcement from the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a significant new exhibition has been confirmed as part of its opening lineup. The museum, co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is set to open on September 22 in Exposition Park, Los Angeles.
The announcement includes a new exhibition titled Star Wars in Motion, which will be one of the first major showcases inside the museum. It will display props, costumes, illustrations, and vehicle designs from the original Star Wars films as well as the prequel era. The exhibit emphasizes the evolution of visual storytelling throughout the filmmaking process.
Alongside the announcement, the museum released a brief teaser video featuring a rapid montage of scenes from the Star Wars films, concluding with the message: “Inaugural Cinema Exhibition: Star Wars in Motion. On September 22, we ride.” The clip wraps up with a digital rendering of the museum building, showcasing its exterior design and the surrounding green campus.
The Lucas Museum is designed around the concept of narrative art, which encompasses art that tells stories across various formats. Planned exhibitions will feature a diverse range of materials, including prehistoric cave art, Renaissance paintings, comic books, photography, and modern film production. The aim is to illustrate how storytelling has progressed throughout human history.
At launch, the museum will showcase over 1,200 objects. Other planned exhibitions will cover topics such as comics, architecture, photography, and children’s literature. The comics section alone will highlight artists like Jack Kirby and Frank Miller, while other sections will celebrate figures from illustration, painting, and film history.
The Star Wars-focused exhibit is anticipated to be one of the main attractions, particularly due to its connection to Lucas’s early filmmaking endeavors. Lucas wrote and directed the first Star Wars film in 1977, which became a monumental box office hit and led to the establishment of the enduring franchise.
Following its announcement, the franchise expanded through multiple trilogies, spin-off films, and television series. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, resulting in a surge of Star Wars content across film and streaming platforms.
Despite this expansion, the museum exhibit will concentrate on the original six films that Lucas was directly involved in prior to the sale of Lucasfilm. This focus provides the exhibition with a more defined historical perspective, centered on the creator’s original vision.
The museum itself will be situated on an 11-acre campus surrounded by gardens and designed as a venue for both art and film history. Memberships are already available ahead of its opening, with various pricing tiers announced for early supporters.
