Taylor Sheridan has established a formidable presence in modern television, with his universe of gritty, character-driven narratives serving as a highlight for Paramount+. From the expansive ranching saga ‘Yellowstone’ to the gripping crime drama ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, Sheridan’s creations have consistently attracted large audiences. However, for years, his titles remained largely behind the Paramount+ paywall, with only a few exceptions making their way to competing platforms.

That barrier has been steadily weakening throughout 2026, and the latest news is particularly significant for fans who may have missed a key chapter. The acclaimed Western drama ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ is officially headed to Netflix, set to debut on the platform starting June 1st in the United States, the United Kingdom, and many international regions. This announcement was made by What’s on Netflix, which characterized the arrival as a landmark moment linked to a broader new licensing agreement between the two streaming giants.

According to What’s on Netflix, this makes ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ the first major title to be licensed under this new deal, adding even more importance to the series itself.

Netflix has secured a licensing agreement with Paramount that includes approximately 20 Paramount TV shows coming to the streaming giant, with titles such as ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, ‘SEAL Team’, and the CBS medical drama ‘Watson’ among those previously announced. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed the deal during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, stating that this partnership would introduce shows to Netflix that had never before been available worldwide.

‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ was created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, featuring David Oyelowo in the role of the legendary titular character. The series tells the true story of Bass Reeves, who rose from enslavement to become one of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals throughout his career without sustaining any injuries. The show premiered on Paramount+ in November 2023 and concluded its eight-episode run the following December.

Despite receiving a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe nomination for Oyelowo, the series was never renewed for a second season. Its arrival on Netflix in June 2026 has ignited hope among fans that the show might experience a resurgence, potentially prompting Paramount+ to reconsider a follow-up, although the path ahead is complicated by Sheridan’s ongoing transition to NBCUniversal.

The actor has expressed a deep connection to the project, sharing with Esquire that he spent over eight years trying to bring this story to life, crediting Sheridan’s revival of the Western genre as a significant inspiration for what ultimately became possible.

The precedent is promising for what a Netflix boost could mean. Previous Paramount titles that made the leap, such as the sci-fi drama ‘Halo’ and the teen supernatural series ‘School Spirits’, experienced significant viewership increases after landing on the platform, with audiences discovering them in numbers that far exceeded their original launches on Paramount+.

There is every reason to believe ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ is poised for a similar response, given its rich historical narrative, powerful lead performance, and a supporting cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland in one of his final television roles, and Barry Pepper.
