Horror sequels are notorious for using their final moments to set the stage for what’s next, and the ‘Insidious’ franchise has embraced this tradition. Fans who waited until the end of 2023’s ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ were treated to a flickering light that hinted the Lipstick-Face Demon was far from finished with the Lambert family, a tease that pays off in the latest installment.

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ takes the series in a fresh direction, shifting focus from the Lambert family to Gemma Hall, portrayed by Amelia Eve. Gemma, a dental hygienist, discovers her ability to transport objects and beings between the real world and the terrifying realm known as the Further. This new premise allows the film to create its own mythology while still respecting the connections that have sustained the series through six films.

This connective tissue comes to fruition in the film’s credits, where writer-director Jacob Chase presents a mid-credits scene that finally addresses one of the film’s most persistent visual threats. According to SlashFilm, the sequence features villain Cyrus Lam, played by Sam Spruell, strapped into the chair of the Dead Dentist, a grotesque character portrayed by Jonathan Oldham, who has been hinted at throughout the film without fully revealing his horror.

The scene unfolds after Gemma defeats Cyrus during the film’s climax by tricking him into a trap of his own making. Throughout the movie, Cyrus manipulates Gemma’s courier abilities to smuggle demons and ghosts out of the Further and into the real world. However, Gemma turns the tables by transporting her entire demon-filled house back into the Further, effectively sealing Cyrus inside with the very entities he betrayed.

This betrayal serves as the emotional core of the post-credits payoff. According to Nerdist, Cyrus finds himself at the mercy of the demons he had promised to free, only to fail them, leading them to turn on him inside the Dead Dentist’s chair as the drilling horror hinted at in the trailers finally comes to fruition.

The scene also features a notable cameo from franchise history, with Keyface, the demon first introduced in 2018’s ‘Insidious: The Last Key,’ appearing to lock the series’ iconic red door. According to Comingsoon.net, this image effectively seals Cyrus inside the Further as a captive for what seems to be an indefinite period, wrapping up his story while leaving the door ajar for potential future appearances.

In addition to Cyrus’s grim fate, the credits scene briefly showcases the Lipstick-Face Demon, the recurring entity that has haunted the Lambert family since the original 2010 film. According to Looper, the demon manages to hitch a ride into the material world alongside other escaped entities before Gemma swiftly sends it back, subtly confirming that the thread from ‘The Red Door’ remains unresolved, even as this film ventures in a new direction.

Chase made a conscious decision to separate this sequence from the film’s main narrative, placing it after the primary end credits roll rather than integrating it directly into the climax. This structural choice allows Gemma’s victory over Cyrus to feel complete and personal on its own terms, while still rewarding patient viewers with one last twisted moment before the lights come on.

While the scene does not explicitly tease a direct sequel, Cyrus’s survival within the Further keeps the possibility of his eventual return alive. Whether ‘Insidious’ continues to expand this new facet of its mythology will likely depend on how ‘Out of the Further’ performs at the box office following its August 21 release, with the franchise’s future once again hinging on opening weekend numbers.
