Christopher Nolan Compares ‘The Odyssey’ to Today’s Superhero Movies
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic is set to be a major cinematic milestone, with Universal Pictures promoting ‘The Odyssey’ as its key tentpole release. Notably, IMAX tickets for the opening weekend have already sold out a year in advance.
The film’s remarkable advance demand has sparked discussions alongside the biggest blockbusters in modern cinema, drawing comparisons to the expansive superhero franchises that currently dominate the box office. According to Nolan, these comparisons may be more relevant than audiences might think.
In a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Nolan shared that Homer’s foundational work was the “Marvel of its day.” He noted that the source material has a similar appeal to what drives today’s comic book franchises, highlighting the contemporary fascination with seeing “gods walk amongst us” in the MCU or DCU.
This link between ancient mythology and modern superhero narratives serves as the thematic foundation for Nolan’s cinematic interpretation.
During the interview, Nolan elaborated on Homer’s impact on modern comic book culture, stating that “a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics,” and likening Homer to “the sort of George Lucas of his time.” He further explained that “the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that” innate human desire to witness divine beings interacting with mortals.
Rather than viewing superhero films as entirely separate from classical epic traditions, Nolan presents contemporary blockbusters as the spiritual successors of the stories Homer narrated thousands of years ago.
The casting of ‘The Odyssey’ echoes this thematic resonance. The ensemble features several actors with notable superhero backgrounds, including Zendaya as Athena, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and Charlize Theron as Calypso, alongside a star-studded lineup with Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The presence of Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, Batman Robert Pattinson, and Catwoman Anne Hathaway prompted Colbert to remark on their superhero experience, leading directly to Nolan’s philosophical comparison.
With an estimated production budget of $250 million and filmed using cutting-edge IMAX technology, ‘The Odyssey’ is set to premiere on July 17, 2026, making it one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the year.
By framing Homer’s epic as the precursor to modern superhero storytelling, Nolan encourages audiences to rethink both the ancient text and contemporary blockbusters as reflections of the same enduring human mythology.
