Few franchises have transformed audience expectations for animation like the ‘Spider-Verse’ series. When ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ debuted in 2018, it redefined the genre, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and earning acclaim as one of the best superhero films ever made.

Its 2023 sequel, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, took things even further, raking in $690 million globally and receiving another Oscar nomination due to its stunning visual artistry. The bar was set even higher.

This context makes the initial reactions to ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ particularly noteworthy. Sony Pictures unveiled the debut trailer and opening footage during the CinemaCon industry convention on May 5, 2026, providing attendees with a five-minute glimpse of the trilogy-capping film ahead of its planned June 18, 2027 theatrical release. The creative team introduced the footage, leaving the audience buzzing with excitement.

The footage picks up immediately where ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ concluded. Miles is seen tied up and interrogated by his Uncle Aaron and the Prowler variant of himself, who coldly introduces himself while Miles pleads to return to his original universe to save his father’s life.

As he is hunted by Miguel O’Hara’s Spider Society and betrayed by his friends, Miles finds himself navigating the darkest corners of the Spider-Verse in a desperate race against time to reunite with everything he cherishes. Reports suggest that the footage also explores Spider-Punk’s universe and multiversal chaos on an unprecedented scale.

The filmmakers have hinted that this is the final chapter of Miles’ journey, promising the most emotional and spectacular installment yet. This sentiment is echoed by the cast.

Brian Tyree Henry, who voices Miles’ father Jeff Morales, told Variety that the conclusion will be anything but tidy, stating, “there’s not going to be a dry eye in the house” and that it “is not going to wrap up in a nice little bow.” The creative team at CinemaCon in 2025 emphasized their dedication to getting the finale right as the primary reason for its extended delays.

The film is set to release in IMAX and premium large formats, marking it as the first Sony animated film to receive such treatment. With a franchise that has already grossed over a billion dollars combined and reshaped mainstream animation, the pressure on this finale is immense. However, based on early reactions, it seems that Sony and the filmmakers are rising to the occasion.
