The legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has taken a new turn as both parties have reached a settlement on several claims related to the 2024 film ‘It Ends with Us’. However, the case is not entirely resolved.

As reported by Variety, Lively is still pursuing a motion concerning attorney fees after Baldoni’s previous defamation lawsuit against her was dismissed. This motion was filed under a California law designed to protect individuals who speak out about sexual abuse or harassment from retaliatory defamation lawsuits.

Lively accused Baldoni, who both starred in and directed ‘It Ends with Us’, of sexual harassment during the film’s production. She also alleged that there was an online campaign aimed at damaging her reputation after she voiced her concerns. While several of her claims were dismissed by Judge Lewis Liman last month, both parties opted for a settlement rather than proceeding to a federal trial.

Earlier this week, the two sides issued a joint statement regarding the agreement. The statement noted, “We acknowledge the process presented challenges and recognize concerns raised by Ms. Lively deserved to be heard.” It further emphasized that both parties are committed to fostering respectful and professional work environments.

Despite the settlement, Lively’s legal team asserts that the motion regarding attorney fees remains significant, as it could assist others who hesitate to speak out due to fears of defamation lawsuits.

Speaking to Variety, Lively’s attorney Sigrid McCawley stated, “It allows her to help pave the way here.” She added, “This is really a space where she’s been able to do some great good for survivors, and she wants to continue that work.”

Baldoni’s attorney Bryan Freedman disagreed with the notion that the settlement should be viewed as a significant victory for Lively. He highlighted that several of her claims, including those of harassment and defamation, had already been dismissed earlier in the proceedings.

Freedman told Variety, “On April 2 that was gone… That’s when the victory happened. I’m not sure what we’re arguing about at this point.”

Lively’s team contends that California’s Protecting Survivors from Weaponized Defamation Lawsuits Act is still applicable since her original complaint was filed with the California Department of Civil Rights. Conversely, Baldoni’s side argues that the law should not apply because much of the alleged conduct occurred in New York and New Jersey.

The judge may still determine whether Lively is entitled to damages and attorney fees. Further legal filings are anticipated from both sides before a final decision is reached.

Additionally, Lively is reportedly backing new legislation in New York known as the Speak Your Truth Act, which aims to establish protections similar to California’s law for individuals speaking out about abuse and harassment.

For now, while the courtroom battle may be less intense than before, it is far from over. Both sides continue to publicly defend their positions as the remaining legal questions progress.
