The penultimate episode of ‘Outlander’ delivered shocking and significant character deaths as the series approaches its grand finale. Aired on May 8 on Starz, the episode delves into themes of betrayal, secrets, and revenge.

In this gripping installment, two characters meet their demise: Percy Beauchamp, portrayed by Michael Lindall, and Captain Richardson, played by Ben Lambert. Both actors joined the cast in season 7, with their arcs concluding just before the series wraps up.

The episode kicks off with Lord John Grey, played by David Berry, awakening after being kidnapped by Richardson. The antagonist attempts to exploit John’s personal secrets, particularly regarding his romantic entanglements, including one with his stepbrother Percy.

Richardson coerces John into a political maneuver, urging him to persuade his brother against delivering a speech on war funding, fearing it could influence the war’s outcome. However, John stands firm and refuses to comply.

Later, Percy makes another emotional appeal to John, confessing his love and requesting that John relay a message and a ring to his son, William. This prompts a rescue mission involving William, Jamie Fraser, and Claire Fraser, who ultimately assist in freeing Lord John Grey.

During the confrontation with Richardson, Claire uncovers a startling truth: Richardson is a time traveler. He reveals his intention to alter history to ensure a British victory in the American Revolutionary War, believing this would shorten the duration of slavery based on his experiences during the Civil War.

After hearing his rationale, Claire reluctantly agrees to let him go, but Lord John Grey shoots Richardson dead immediately after.

Later in the episode, Percy’s storyline concludes tragically. After John requests him to sign a confession related to the kidnapping and the allegations surrounding John’s personal life, Percy complies. However, once John departs, Percy takes his own life.

These dramatic events follow another significant character death earlier in the season, where Fergus was killed off, diverging from Diana Gabaldon’s original book series. In the novels, a different character meets their end in this scenario, but the show opted to eliminate Fergus instead.

Gabaldon addressed this change in an interview with Parade, stating, “I suppose they thought they had to kill somebody. Personally, I thought if they were too chicken to do it right, they should just have eased back and burned down the print shop.”

The final episode of ‘Outlander’ is set to air on May 15 on Starz, marking the conclusion of the beloved series.
