‘Obsession’ continues to astonish the box office landscape, with the R-rated horror film demonstrating that smaller productions can achieve remarkable success. The Focus Features release is exhibiting incredible staying power in theaters, even weeks after its debut and amidst competition from major releases like ‘Toy Story 5’.

According to box office tracking reports, ‘Obsession’ earned $2.1 million on its sixth Wednesday in the United States. This performance marks the largest sixth Wednesday ever recorded for a horror film. The movie also experienced only a 36.3% drop compared to the previous Wednesday, indicating that audiences remain highly engaged.

The film has now reached an impressive $222.2 million domestic total, and industry analysts believe it is on track to surpass the $250 million mark in the United States. Some estimates suggest that the final domestic run could reach between $250 million and $270 million if the movie maintains its current momentum.

The success of ‘Obsession’ is particularly remarkable given its modest budget. The supernatural horror film was produced for less than $1 million, with production costs estimated at around $750,000. Focus Features acquired worldwide distribution rights for approximately $15 million, excluding certain international markets.

These results have transformed the movie into a significant financial success for all parties involved. Focus Features and the producers have enjoyed a substantial return on their investment, especially when compared to the enormous budgets typically required for major studio films.

‘Obsession’ was written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker, a YouTube comedian known for his sketch videos and short horror projects. The film follows Bear, a music store employee who discovers a supernatural toy that grants his wish for his friend Nikki to fall in love with him. However, this wish quickly spirals into terrifying consequences.

The cast features Michael Johnston as Bear and Inde Navarrette as Nikki, with Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter in supporting roles. Barker also lends his voice to the film.

The concept for ‘Obsession’ emerged after Barker’s previous short horror project ‘The Chair’ garnered online attention. Producer James Harris later approached him about expanding his work into a feature film. Instead of adapting ‘The Chair’, Barker pitched ‘Obsession’, a distinct story inspired in part by classic horror-comedy themes.

Filming took place in Los Angeles in October 2024, marking Barker’s second feature film following ‘Milk & Serial’. This project represented his first major theatrical release.

‘Obsession’ first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, where Focus Features purchased the distribution rights. This deal reportedly became one of the largest acquisitions for a genre film in the festival’s history. Jason Blum also joined the project as an executive producer through Blumhouse Productions.

After its theatrical release on May 15, ‘Obsession’ quickly became both a critical and commercial triumph. The film has grossed hundreds of millions worldwide, making it Focus Features’ highest-grossing movie to date.

The film’s unexpected journey has made it one of the biggest surprises of the year. While many anticipated that large franchise films would dominate theaters, ‘Obsession’ has proven that an original horror story with a small budget can still emerge as a box office powerhouse.

With its strong theatrical performance continuing, the film is now pursuing an even greater milestone. What once seemed like an improbable success story has evolved into one of the most impressive horror runs in recent box office history.
