Taylor Sheridan is shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Kevin Costner’s controversial exit from ‘Yellowstone’. The creator of the acclaimed western drama recently disclosed that Costner’s departure was anticipated, and the initial vision for John Dutton’s storyline was quite different from what unfolded.

In a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan discussed Costner’s role in the series, clarifying that the actor was never intended to remain indefinitely. Costner portrayed John Dutton III, the formidable owner of the Yellowstone ranch and patriarch of the Dutton family, since the show’s inception.

Sheridan revealed that the original concept was for Costner to lead the series for three seasons before transitioning the narrative to the next generation of the Dutton family.

“The notion was for him to be in the first three seasons,” Sheridan stated during the podcast. He noted that this plan was even outlined in Costner’s contract and was always part of their storytelling vision.

According to Sheridan, the intention was for John Dutton’s youngest son to eventually take over the ranch, allowing the series to delve into the family’s struggle to protect their land or face the possibility of losing everything they had fought for.

“His youngest son takes over, and then we watch him lose that ranch or not lose it,” Sheridan elaborated.

However, the overwhelming success of ‘Yellowstone’ altered those plans. Sheridan mentioned that Paramount was reluctant to proceed without Costner, as the actor had become integral to the show’s popularity.

Sheridan explained that while Costner was interested in pursuing other projects, the network wanted him to stay on due to the show’s immense success. “Paramount was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it,” Sheridan remarked, adding that Costner was ready to move on. Ultimately, he remained for two additional seasons due to the show’s popularity. Sheridan characterized ‘Yellowstone’ as a massive success, noting that networks are often hesitant to end or alter a winning formula.

“The notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network,” Sheridan said. Costner ultimately announced his exit during the hiatus between the first and second parts of ‘Yellowstone’ season 5. His departure prompted significant changes for the series, including the decision to kill off John Dutton when the second half of the season commenced.

Costner’s exit was also tied to his long-anticipated western film project ‘Horizon: An American Saga’, which he had spent years trying to realize. Costner previously mentioned that scheduling conflicts were only part of the reason for his departure, with changes to filming schedules and scripts also contributing factors.

The situation became even more complex during Costner’s divorce proceedings, with reports indicating he was contemplating legal action related to his exit from ‘Yellowstone’. Sheridan later remarked that the involvement of lawyers complicated matters between the two parties, but he still wished Costner well.

Despite the turmoil surrounding the exit, Sheridan’s recent comments imply that there is no significant personal conflict between them. The creator also confirmed that John Dutton’s narrative was always intended to have a tragic conclusion, although Costner’s departure altered the timing of that ending.

With the ‘Yellowstone’ universe expanding through new projects and spinoffs, there remains a chance that Costner could return in some capacity, even if only through flashbacks. For now, Sheridan’s insights indicate that John Dutton’s fate was always part of the plan, with the timing simply differing from the original expectations.
