‘Mortal Kombat II’ Dominates Box Office, Outperforming ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’
‘Mortal Kombat II’ has surged to the top of the North American box office, surpassing ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ on Friday, marking another successful launch for Warner Bros. in the realm of video game adaptations.
As reported by Variety, the action-packed sequel raked in approximately $17 million on its opening Friday from over 3,500 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. While initial projections estimated the film’s weekend earnings to be around $35 million, updated forecasts now suggest it could close the weekend with about $41 million domestically.
This sequel comes with a significantly larger budget than its 2021 predecessor, costing around $80 million to produce. The original ‘Mortal Kombat’ debuted during the pandemic and was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, ultimately grossing $84 million worldwide. Industry experts believe the sequel will surpass that figure more swiftly, thanks to improved theatrical conditions and a rising interest in video game films.
A notable highlight of this installment is the addition of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. Director Simon McQuoid has returned for this sequel, with Jeremy Slater penning the script.

The film follows Johnny Cage and Earth’s champions as they confront the formidable emperor Shao Kahn. The cast features Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Tati Gabrielle, and Tadanobu Asano.
In contrast, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ slipped to second place after leading last weekend’s box office. The comedy-drama sequel earned $9.8 million on Friday and is still projected to have a robust second weekend overall. Some estimates indicate it could add over $40 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total past $140 million.
Meanwhile, ‘Michael’ continues its strong performance in third place, with the Michael Jackson biopic adding another $8.8 million on Friday and projected to reach nearly $239 million domestically by the end of the weekend.
New releases this weekend also included ‘Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)’, which debuted with $4.5 million on Friday. According to Variety, the concert film is expected to earn around $8 million during its opening weekend.
Another newcomer, ‘Sheep Detectives’, also hit theaters this weekend. This family mystery film, based on the novel ‘Three Bags Full’, brought in $4 million on Friday and could finish the weekend with approximately $15 million domestically.
