Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Sued by Miami Police Over Netflix Movie The Rip
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are encountering legal issues related to their recent Netflix crime thriller The Rip. As reported by 7 News Miami, a group of actual police officers involved in a 2016 Miami narcotics case has filed a lawsuit through the actors’ production company, Artists Equity.
Released in January on Netflix, the film is “inspired by true events” and depicts a fictionalized account of a significant drug raid that revealed millions in cash. The narrative reunites Damon and Affleck as law enforcement officers whose mission becomes increasingly complex upon discovering the vast sum of money.
The lawsuit alleges that the film portrays a false and damaging image of the real officers involved in the case. One of the lead detectives from the 2016 investigation, Jonathan Santana, remarked: “When you rip something, you’re stealing something. We never stole a dollar.”

Santana further expressed that the film has altered public perception of him, stating: “Pretty much saying, you know, how many buckets of money did I steal?”
Another officer’s attorney, Ignacio Alvarez, contended that the film has tarnished their reputations. He stated: “They portrayed police officers as dirty, they portrayed my clients as dirty.” He also added: “My clients are now hurt for the rest of their lives with everybody perceives that they’re dirty.”
In The Rip, Damon and Affleck portray officers conducting a high-stakes drug raid that escalates after they uncover a massive cache of cash. The film also stars Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Scott Adkins, and Steven Yeun.
The lawsuit further asserts that the film includes fabricated scenes involving corruption, cartel connections, and illegal actions by police. Officials argue that these portrayals are inaccurate and have negatively impacted public perception of those involved in the actual case.
