Uwe Boll built his early career by adapting video games into films, producing widely criticized titles like ‘BloodRayne,’ ‘Alone in the Dark,’ and ‘Far Cry’ throughout the 2000s. For years, this trend saw games fueling his film endeavors, but that dynamic has now shifted.

With his latest project, ‘Citizen Vigilante,’ Boll has turned the tables. The film features Armie Hammer as a wealthy businessman who becomes a vigilante, targeting criminals and corrupt officials. It stirred significant controversy this summer due to its anti-immigrant themes.

In a surprising twist, Boll has announced that ‘Citizen Vigilante’ will be adapted into a video game titled ‘Citizen Vigilante: The Video Game.’ Developed by German studio Polygon Art, the game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on July 17.

According to the game’s official description, players will take on the role of Hammer’s character, Sanders, in a story-driven action campaign consisting of eight missions within a sprawling urban landscape. The gameplay promises intense gunfights, vehicle chases, and an original soundtrack sourced directly from the film, alongside combat featuring graphic violence and dismemberment.

Boll elaborated on the themes of the project in comments to Dexerto, stating that the narrative reflects his frustration with criminals evading real consequences. He pointed to specific cases in Germany where he felt serious offenders were inadequately punished or removed, framing the vigilante storyline as a response to perceived failures in the justice system.

The film has faced significant backlash since its release, including a ban in Germany after regulators deemed it incited violence against migrants. The controversy intensified when Elon Musk promoted the film, uploading it for free on his platform for 48 hours, which helped secure a broader international distribution deal.

Despite the criticism, the film reportedly became the top-selling title on both the Apple TV Store and Amazon Prime Video following its digital release, a stark contrast to its overwhelmingly negative reviews. Critics largely panned the film’s plot and messaging, though some right-leaning commentators praised it.

Hammer’s relationship with the film has reportedly become complex, with a report from Puck indicating he felt shaken and regretful after viewing the completed project for the first time. Nevertheless, Boll remains optimistic that Hammer would consider returning for a sequel, which he hopes to produce by 2027 if the current release proves financially successful.

It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to the video game adaptation compared to the film’s unexpected commercial success when it launches on PlayStation next week.
