A new trailer has been unveiled for the animated fantasy film ‘Another World’, which initially started as a short project before evolving into a significant international success.

This update comes from GKIDS, the North American distributor managing the film’s release, along with insights from festival and award reports.

‘Another World’ marks the feature directorial debut of Tommy Ng Kai Chung. It began as a 14-minute short film that captured attention at international festivals in 2019. This early acclaim helped the team secure funding to transform it into a full-length feature.

The film is adapted from the novel ‘Sennenki’ by Naka Saijo. It won Best Animated Feature at the Golden Horse Awards, a prestigious event in Chinese-language cinema, and has become the highest-grossing animated film in Hong Kong history.

The new trailer emphasizes atmosphere and visuals rather than a straightforward narrative. It features a girl and a masked spirit navigating a surreal and enchanting realm filled with beauty, melancholy, and peril.

GKIDS has provided a clearer synopsis of the story. It centers on Gudo, a spirit known as a Soul Keeper, who guides human souls into their next life. He encounters a young girl named Yuri, who died prematurely and is now trapped by intense feelings of anger and regret. As her soul becomes increasingly unstable, Gudo strives to prevent her from causing harm to both the human and spirit worlds.

The official description states, “Another World is a dark fairytale that explores forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of hatred and despair.”

The film is a product of global collaboration, with artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, France, and the Philippines contributing to its creation. It will premiere in North American theaters starting June 5, with screenings available in Cantonese and English subtitles.

GKIDS has yet to announce any details regarding a streaming or home release date.
