‘The Testaments’ Star Mattea Conforti Discusses Becka’s Shocking Crime and Season 1 Finale
Mattea Conforti, who portrays Becka in Hulu’s ‘The Testaments’, recently opened up about her character’s intense journey and the shocking decisions she makes in the Season 1 finale. The series is inspired by characters from the world created by Margaret Atwood and is developed for Hulu with Bruce Miller as part of the production team.
In the concluding episodes of Season 1, Becka’s narrative takes a dark turn. She discovers that her father, Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards), has been sexually assaulting girls at her school. The situation becomes even more heartbreaking when she learns that her best friend Agnes (Chase Infiniti), whom she has deep romantic feelings for, was one of his victims. This revelation pushes Becka to her breaking point.
In a moment of overwhelming emotion, Becka kills her father while he is in the bathtub at home. The act is sudden and violent, altering the course of her life. Afterward, she confides in Agnes about her actions, but this leads to further complications. Agnes attempts to assist her, but the situation spirals out of control, and Becka is ultimately taken into custody.
Although Becka commits the crime, the repercussions extend beyond her. Her mother, Paula (Amy Seimetz), intervenes and takes the blame for the incident. Meanwhile, Becka is coerced into a marriage with Garth (Brad Alexander), a man Agnes loves. The finale leaves Becka ensnared in a life she never desired, surrounded by loss and the control of others.
In an interview with Deadline, Mattea Conforti shared her approach to such a challenging storyline and what she believes motivates Becka’s actions. She emphasized that understanding Becka’s emotional state was crucial for her performance. She remarked, “That really helps me get it, because it’s such a specific mindset that I have to be in.” Conforti noted that the character’s feelings evolve naturally throughout the season.
Conforti also discussed Becka’s love for Agnes and its influence on her choices. She believes that Becka’s bond with Agnes is what drives her to the edge. As she expressed, “She is a woman whom she cares so deeply about, platonically and romantically.” In her perspective, Becka thinks she is acting out of justice, despite the extremity of her actions.
The actress reflected on the emotional weight of the finale, particularly its impact on Becka’s family. She highlighted the scene where Becka’s mother sacrifices herself to protect her daughter. Conforti described it as a very emotional moment to film, showcasing the depth of a mother’s love in a world filled with cruelty and control.

When discussing Becka’s future, Conforti described her as someone who is profoundly lost after the events that transpire. She stated that Becka feels trapped and confused, especially after being forced into marriage. In her words, Becka ultimately becomes what she never wanted to be, grappling with loneliness and sadness.
This interview with Conforti follows the Season 1 finale of ‘The Testaments’. While the series has yet to confirm how Becka’s story will progress, Conforti hopes the character will eventually discover strength and independence in future episodes.
