Adele Lim has provided an exciting update regarding Princess Diaries 3, confirming that the highly anticipated sequel is progressing and will feature familiar faces from the beloved original films.

During her appearance at the Gold Gala carpet, as reported by Variety, Lim discussed the project’s direction and her role as director. The new film will continue the journey of Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis.

Lim mentioned that production is moving along well, but the team is dedicated to perfecting the story before fully advancing. She emphasized the significance of the franchise to fans who grew up with it, and how it resonates with her as a parent.

She stated, “We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people.”

Lim also revealed that her vision for the new film differs from the earlier installments. Rather than solely focusing on a young girl discovering her royal heritage, the narrative will now explore a more mature Mia as the Queen of Genovia.

She said, “There are so many movies that are wish fulfilment for princesses, we don’t have a lot of wish fulfilment movies for queens. That’s what we are setting out to do here, to show a woman in her full power.”

Anne Hathaway is anticipated to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, continuing her journey from the original Princess Diaries films. Lim hinted that fans can expect the return of characters from previous movies, though specific details remain under wraps.

She teased during the event, “If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun returns.” Additionally, she mentioned that the film will be set in Genovia, with plans to film in Europe to authentically depict the fictional kingdom.

In addition to Princess Diaries 3, Lim is also involved in other projects. She serves as an executive producer for a Crazy Rich Asians sequel series currently in development at HBO, which aims to expand the universe introduced in the 2018 hit film she co-wrote.

Lim expressed excitement about the TV format, stating, “We’re very excited because in a TV series we have the opportunity to explore all these different characters that the amazing writer Kevin Kwan brought to life in his book series.”

While casting for returning characters is still being finalized, she noted the intention to continue familiar storylines wherever possible.

With both projects in the works, Adele Lim is focused on expanding cherished narratives while introducing audiences to new interpretations of beloved characters.
