Man Arrested for Stealing Johnny Depp’s Credit Card and Spending for 2 Years
A fraud suspect has been apprehended in Hungary after allegedly using stolen credit card information belonging to Johnny Depp to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds over two years. Authorities report that this case involved a lengthy series of online transactions that went unnoticed for months until flagged by a financial institution.
Investigators reveal that the suspect is a 27-year-old man from Jordan, arrested in Budapest, where he was reportedly renting an apartment. Police state he utilized the stolen card details for various online purchases, including accommodation bookings and other digital transactions.
In total, investigators are examining around 308 separate transactions, with a combined value estimated at over £536,000, or approximately €619,000. Officials indicate that the spending occurred between January 2024 and December 2025.
One of the most surprising aspects of the case is that Depp himself was reportedly unaware of the fraudulent activity for more than two years. Reports suggest that the transactions were only uncovered when his bank detected suspicious activity and flagged the account.
The investigation commenced earlier this year when an American financial institution alerted the Hungarian branch of the FBI after noticing unusual withdrawals from one of their client accounts. Authorities traced the activity through multiple digital footprints, including IP addresses, email accounts, and a Hungarian phone number linked to the transactions.
Police eventually located the suspect in Budapest and executed a raid on the property where he was staying. During the search, officers confiscated electronic devices believed to have been used in the alleged fraud scheme.
Authorities also reported finding substances suspected to be illegal drugs inside the apartment, leading to a separate investigation into possible narcotics possession.
Hungarian police released footage showing officers detaining the suspect and escorting him away in handcuffs. Officials state that the man has denied all accusations, but a court has ordered him into pre-trial detention while the investigation continues.
At this point, investigators are still working to determine how the stolen credit card details were obtained. They are exploring several possibilities, including a data breach, online theft, or exposure through a previous transaction. No definitive cause has been confirmed.
Depp has spent time in Hungary in recent years while working on film projects, including ‘Modi.’ During his stays, he has been seen filming in several well-known locations around Budapest, including areas near Buda Castle and the Hungarian State Opera House.
Police indicate that the investigation remains active, and further arrests have not been ruled out. They continue to examine the full extent of the alleged fraud and whether others may have been involved.
The case has garnered attention due to both the scale of the spending and the fact that it reportedly continued for such an extended period without being detected by the account holder. Authorities expect more details to emerge as the investigation unfolds.
